So I seem to recall reading something a while ago that mentioned something to do with hot surfaces on a vehicle which were within reach of pedestrians. I'm sure it was specifically related to exhaust tailpipe or silencer location.

Does anyone know of any specific EU or UK vehicle legislation that deals with this? I've googled it but can't seem to find anything.

UK type approval trickles-down from UNECE.

Nearest that's easily publicly accessible is the IVA requirements.

Wasn't this discussed recently about something like a AC Cobra where the Exhaust runs the length of the car.

I'm sure the question was around what would happen if someone got burnt from it.

My Caterhams were pretty adept at burning passengers' legs as they got out of the car. And I recall that certain engine variations could emit exhaust flames on over run that could incinerate an entire bus stop queue. Not that anyone would, of course.

I still have a large scar on my leg from burning it on my 'seven' in 1998 when I first bought it, ( lovely weather, wearing shorts) You do learn very quickly to step out W I D E afterwards.

On the plus side, you can have a lot of fun lifting lady passengers out of the car after a trip!

To be fair, over-enthusiastic regulation would take every motor bike off the road.

The UK seems to have a lax approach to low-volume/one-off vehicle approval compared with most of Europe, has anyone been pulled or worse for the pedestrian hazards presented by a Caterham/Cobra style exhaust on the Continent?
As an aside I saw a vid on YouTube where a chap drove a Caterham around Kingston and then cooked bacon and egg on the exhaust biggrin

I IVA'd a kitcar a few years ago with side exhaust with no heat shield.

There were no issues regarding the exhaust, they were more interested in the radiuses of my dash and dials!
