I had both numberplates stolen off my car on Tuesday, I had 2 new ones made up as soon as I could. However, Halfords could only fit them with sticky tabs as they couldn’t drill them as they didn’t have a template. I was reluctant to get them fitted with just sticky tabs as I had just had a set stolen. I have made an appointment with a garage who will be able to drill them next week (due to Easter this is the earliest opportunity) the appointment is just verbal, not an email etc. I am due to travel around 180 miles this weekend to visit my Mum for Easter, the plates will be on display in the car and I have a reference number from the Police.

My question is, am I taking the piss doing a long journey and if I was pulled, what would be any outcome?

Thanks

I'm quite sure you could be stopped, especially if you went past a NPR op'. Number plates have to be fitted in the car's correct location and clearly visible.

You have a reasonable explanation, you'll be fine.. however, no one will nick your plates on the move so use the sticky tabs..

I bought a light use drill for £30 from B&Q last week.

How would screwing them on stop them being stolen?

A template for drilling a couple of holes in each plate?
Don't they possess a tape measure, ffs...?

Maybe the car wasn’t there for them to measure the positions? Doesn’t sound like the OP would have been able to help them with that.

Don’t you know anyone with a drill, OP? It’s such a no brainer, easy job; you really need to take it in to a garage?

Yes you are, and you would get done for not displaying number plates (and rightly so in my opinion).

You have already proved that however the plates were fitted before didn't work so I'm sure Halfords sticky pads will be more than suitable.

If you really are unable to fix number plates to your car I would suggest using public transport or a taxi.

a/ Buy a drill. How can anyone exist without the ability to bore round holes?
b/ Don't worry. Most plates are stolen to facilitate fuel theft. They fit your plates to their vehicle, fill up with fuel and drive off without paying. Being already in possession of a set of your plates, the thief does not need another set.

Buy sticky plates, stick them in front and rear windows of car.

Attend proper 'drilling' session as reserved.

If the police really are that arsed, and pull you, give them the explanation, if not successful, then just stick the bloody things to the front and rear of the car to appease.

I can’t believe anyone would endorse taking a car in to a garage just to have number plates drilled.

Surely even this will be cheaper than getting a garage to do it:

I had my rear plate stolen and front plate torn off and damaged and left on the road. I drove around for a bit without them on. Didn't get stopped, didn't get pulled even though I had driven past a few Police cars. I had the bent and damaged front plate in the boot just in case but it surprised me nothing happened.

Agreed.. Don't put them in the window, both my cars number plates are held on with strong double sided tape and they wont be coming loose for a very long time.

Just buy proper double sided tape rated for external use and not those white foam tabs.

Just buy proper outdoor rated external tape, you can even buy double sided pads of different thicknesses to match the contour of the car....I've used it on my cars for years and never had an issue with a number plate falling off.

That or go and buy a drill and a tape measure? It is hardly rocket science.

Surely it's much easier to remove (i.e. steal) plates that are attached with screws than stuck on ones which I've always found a bit of a pain to remove?

Did you miss the bit in the opening post when he said Halfords?

I wouldn't trust them to fit a sticker correctly !

Very interested to know what sort of specialised number plate garage you are using such that the nearest one to you is 180 miles away?
