Following on from the other thread, the opposite question - which driving law would you remove if you could?

For me it would be the law that says your keys need to be out of the ignition to use your phone. Instead, I would suggest that as long as you are parked in a suitable place, handbrake on and out out gear, you should be fine to take a call/check Google Maps etc.

The requirement to physically have the engine turned off is pretty impractical in some cases, and why have the keys out? What benefit does it have to remove the keys if the engine is switched off anyway? For the record I don't approve of mobile phone use while driving, I certainly don't do it and think that it's a pretty dickish thing to do, however I think the law is OTT on what conditions you are actually permitted to use a mobile device. They may as well currently say you're not allowed to use one of your even sitting in the driving seat.

What does the PH collective think, which existing laws grind your gears?

70mph limit on the m1. Its all pretty much variable speed, so have the speed limit lowered if there is heavy traffic or an accident. But at certain times, and in good conditions 100 and then if accidents don’t go up, try no limit.

MOT after 5 years not 3. It was under consideration (It used to be 10 years way back! - not suggesting that.

Warning other drivers of a speed trap should not be an offence, after all isn't the idea to make them drive at or below the limit?

Easily avoidable though:

“I was just waving to my friend”

Or

“I thought the driver was going a bit fast through my town so expressed my displeasure with a thumbs down”

I’d probably punt the motorway limit up to 90.

Drink driving, we’ve all got different tolerances just leave it to us to make an informed decision. As long as the driver doesn’t crash or kill anyone then it should be ignored.

At 5 years old my car had 20,000 miles. A friend of mine does 1,000 miles a week, a lot of it towing. Quite happy to have my car inspected every year from new, i's no great hardship when it's serviced every year anyway.

Personally I think three years is more than enough.

There's a lot of people that never service their cars and only spend on them if they fail an MOT.

You'd be surprised at how many cars fail their first MOT at three years old on things like tyres and brake pads.

Having to stop at a red traffic light between midnight and say 5am. Treat them as give ways like a roundabout

Forgot about that one. Might be better just turning a lot of lights off to save £££.

Not so much a law though or at least more a change than removal.

Just change them to flash AMBER during these periods to alert people of a junction

Lower speed limits in towns to 20mph

Lower speed limits past schools to 10mph

Raise speed limits to no limit on the motorways but with an advisory of 90mph
Raise speed limits on the likes of the A1 to 90mph

Not a law but I’d change all cats eyes to those that work all the time even if you’ve turned your lights off

Winter tyres mandatory between November and April

Mot every year

Like in flying you have to take a proficiency test every 12 month to show you’re capable I think something similar every 2-3yrs

Bring back tax discs

Flashing headlamps to let other road users know that you are there. As HC Rule 110.

Flashing amber? Imagine the carnage, just like all those US car crash clips.

Mot after 1 year and then every 6 months on the basis of how many cars you see with faulty lights
and iffy tyres ..

Absolutely not. I’m shocked you even suggest it.

No-one knows their personal tolerance and when you’ve had a drink, you think you are much more capable than you really are.

I would vote for any government that brought in near-Zero tolerance (with just enough leeway to account for medicines). Then everyone knows where they stand and there is no ambiguity.

No-one should be allowed to trust their own judgement when impaired through alcohol. I say this as a heavy social drinker.
