One of my wipers(passenger side) isn't working and I've been told to get new wipers arms.

If I drive around in the meantime, will I get points or anything like that. Asked local garage he told me so long as driver side is working police shouldn't care but I must say in the rain visibilty is reduced significantly so advice sounds dodgy to me.

Will get it repaired but just wondering will I be pulled up, be given points etc.

Thanks

I wouldn't drive a car at all where I'd only be able to see out of half the screen when it rains.

There will be a law about x% clear visibility that you would, probably, be breaking.

Last year, my driver’s side wiper arm pinged off while it was throwing it down on my way home i the M5 on the way from work in Tewkesbury to home in Hampshire. The only way I could see was to keep the speed over 90 so that the wind blew the water off the screen.

I was driving a BMW 630i at the time, which is relatively rare so I didn’t fancy my chances of finding a replacement. I phoned BMW Swindon on the A417 on the off chance and to see how long a new part would take to be deliver. As luck would have it, they had one arrive that morning. I paid for it there and then and hot footed it to the dealership to collect it. I arrived there at 5.58pm and a tech had stayed on to help me fit it so Incould continue my journey safely- big thumbs up to them!!!

Construction & Use regs:

Windscreen wipers and washers

34.—(1) Subject to paragraphs (4) and (5), every vehicle fitted with a windscreen shall, unless the driver can obtain an adequate view to the front of the vehicle without looking through the windscreen, be fitted with one or more efficient automatic windscreen wipers capable of clearing the windscreen so that the driver has an adequate view of the road in front of both sides of the vehicle and to the front of the vehicle.
(2) Save as provided in paragraphs (3), (4) and (5), every wheeled vehicle required by paragraph (1) to be fitted with a wiper or wipers shall also be fitted with a windscreen washer capable of cleaning, in conjunction with the windscreen wiper, the area of the windscreen swept by the wiper of mud or similar deposit.
(3) The requirement specified in paragraph (2) does not apply in respect of—

(a) an agricultural motor vehicle (other than a vehicle first used on or after 1st June 1986 which is driven at more than 20 mph);
(b) a track-laying vehicle;
(c) a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 20 mph; or
(d) a vehicle being used to provide a local service, as defined in the Transport Act 1985.

(4) Instead of complying with paragraphs (1) and (2), a vehicle may comply with Community Directive 78/318.
(5) Instead of complying with paragraph (1) an agricultural motor vehicle may comply with Community Directive 79/1073.
(6) Every wiper and washer fitted in accordance with this regulation shall at all times while a vehicle is being used on a road be maintained in efficient working order and be properly adjusted.

And from: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/windscr...

A person is guilty of an offence if he uses, or causes or permits another to use, a motor vehicle or trailer on a road when:

(a) the condition of the motor vehicle or trailer, or of its accessories or equipment; or
(b) the purpose for which it is used; or
(c) the number of passengers carried by it, or the manner in which they are carried; or
(d) the weight, position or distribution of its load, or the manner in which it is secured

is such that the use of the motor vehicle or trailer involves a danger of injury to any person.

Can't you just drive around in reverse using the parking camera to see? </TopGear>

I've been forced to drive around without the wipers working in the past whilst waiting for parts to arrive....

As an interim solution RainX works well as long as you keep your speed above 40mph ish...

I'd imagine it would be quite difficult for the police to identify that your wipers were not working unless they followed you for a while in a heavy downpour and happened to notice or if they stopped you for another reason and then decided to check everything over...

I think that if they were going to give you points for it, they would classify it under "driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition".

I'll second the Rain-X suggestion as an emergency backstop. Halfords sell it if you need it immediately.

Sorry, nobody has ‘forced’ you to drive a car in an illegal condition.

I am not making stuff up, you said you were forced to drive your car, clearly you weren’t know you are back-tracking using abuse. Say what you mean first time! The circumstances are irrelevant.

If your wiper blade flies off while in lane 2 of the motorway (see schmalex's post above) then you are forced to drive illegally until you can safely stop. (The forcer being the technician who fitted the wiper arm.) HTH wink
