How many police motorcyclists in london?
Discussion
How many police motorcyclist does the met and TVP have?
Driving out from Hammersmith on the M4 yesterday, I saw what I guess was the return from Windsor of the various commonwealth delegates and entourage on the other carriageway. Each batch of coaches/cars seemed to have their own escort of 4/5 bikes plus a few other vehicles. Were there any bikes left in the South ?
I reckon the traffic was also suffering blue light fatigue..As it seemed less inclined to part after the first waves

Funny I was thinking the exact same thing on Thursday after I joined Great West Road via the r/b overpass and there were 10 police motorbikes riding in formation heading towards the city. Lights weren't on but it was unusual to see such a concentration of them. Then seemed to continually see individual bikes during the rest of my journey; just one of those days when you notice a huge police presence.

Amazing how they are not 'short or resources' if is not the general public.
Football matches often have a lot of resources allocated to them. My dad's funeral courtege (1 car and a hearse) had Police motorcycle outriders (6 I think) performing a blue light run, to escort him to the house, his hearse and us to the Cathedral and him to the crematorium.
Whilst a very sad day for the family it was quite something to experience being in the middle of it all, the efficiency and how the Police motorcyclists worked together blocking off roads, junctions and roundabouts to enable an unhindered journey was something else.

are they referred to as a shoal, pack or perhaps herd when they are in this sort of convoy?
There was a obvious difference between the white bikes of the Special escort group ( or whatever they are now called ) and the other bikes. The former were an elegant shoal or a well managed pack, the others a herd or a rabble ( though i suspect riding alongside another rider at speed is a lot more difficult than it appears and my experience here is watching CHiPs :-) )

Not according to the Police, mostly stewards now.We were trying to test some specialist equipment with the Police and trying to find events they have a reasonable presence at was actually quite difficult.

Like any big event people will have had their days off cancelled and other officers shipped in from outside forces. I'd be amazed if they're all Met.
Our office is next to Guildhall in the City and certainly some of the police outside there on Commonwealth duty had come down from Birmingham.Edited by Greendubber on Saturday 21st April 16:11

Was there a specific reason why he had a police escort?Whilst a very sad day for the family it was quite something to experience being in the middle of it all, the efficiency and how the Police motorcyclists worked together blocking off roads, junctions and roundabouts to enable an unhindered journey was something else.

He was also carried into the Cathedral by Police pall bearers through a Police guard of honour and the Chief Constable read a eulogy,
Personally I thought it was overkill but he would have absolutely loved it.

Might be BS but I heard once that all police pursuit drivers in the Met (or maybe it was the city of london?) need to also be trained as motorcycle escorts too, such is the need for the latter and the ‘spikes’ in demand.
No idea how many bikes they have however.

The Met have about 5000 vehicles of which 330 are bikes.
