New Car Knocks
Discussion
Bought a car from a small dealership just over a week ago. The car had passed it's MOT with apparently no advisories the day before I collected.
Condition wise I couldn't fault it and it was serviced at a main dealer from new until 6000 miles ago.
In a week since I've had it one of the wheel bearings is grinding like a mill stone, it's so loud you would need to be completely deaf not to hear it so amazed if the person that took the car or performed the MOT didn't notice it.
The suspension also has several knocks all of which I believe should have been picked up as the are definitely noticeable even on smooth roads.
Am I within my rights to demand that the dealership sort it out or is it YP.

If those things are so obvious why didn't you notice during the test drive?Condition wise I couldn't fault it and it was serviced at a main dealer from new until 6000 miles ago.

Age, mileage, price paid?
They all have a bearing on what’s regarded as acceptable.
I imagine the wheel bearing would get done as a pre-existing fault but knocks from the suspension would be trickier. Can’t be that severe if you didn’t notice them on the test drive surely?

Sale of goods act is on your side in that the car should be of an acceptable quality and in line with your expectations. If you have spent £40,000 on a nearly new high end car you would expect it to be perfect. If you spent £1,000 on something 15 years old then it would be expected that it has a few faults.
If you think that the noises are not in line with what you would reasonably expect for a car of that age and what you paid for it, then take it back to the dealer.

Just take the thing back and speak to the dealer FFS.
You can't blame the OP for asking. For relatively inexperienced car buyers (myself included) I think it's very useful to gauge opinions from PHers on this sort of thing before speaking to the dealer. If the PH opinion was "100% the dealer should sort this out free of charge, give you a courtesy car and a letter of apology" the way you raise it with the dealer and what you're willing to accept would be very different than if the PH opinion was "tough luck, stop being so fussy, not the dealer's problem"
Stop being a dick.
Have you checked the MOT history yourself?

If it really has passed with no advisories and there's obviously knocking from suspension, something isn't right...

Are you sure this is not a stone caught in the disc?KevinCamaroSS said:

It needed the bearing changed and also needs the anti-roll bar bushings changed. How a garage had the car up on a ramp and gave it a 30 point inspection before taking it to pass an MOT is something I find incredible.https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history
