We have a classic car, not SORN as it predates this by some years. It's almost at the end of a restoration with the plan to go and MOT it on Tuesday. It doesn't actually need an MOT under new legislation but for peace of mind we wanted it done anyway.

Can it be taxed online from the carpark of the MOT station or do I need to take all the documents into the local post office?

In summary

Been off road for 15 years
Tax exempt

Thanks all.

if it's doesn't require an MOT, why not try entering the details into the online tax portal and see if you can tax it now?

I may be wrong, but if it's MOT exempt I don't think he'll be able to do it online. It will need to be at a Post Office. V5C, plus a completed V112 required.
The quirk being that if he does get an MOT the online portal may work as soon as the database is updated. Is the vehicle in the Historic category?

Yep, it's historic which is causing the issue.

I assume it's legal to drive from MOT centre to the Post Office?

New legislation hasn't started yet. It's pre 60 for mot at the moment and the 40 year exemption starts in a couple of weeks I believe.

The exemption for no tax doesn't specifically allow it to be driven to the post office. If caught you may well be ok In the circs. But you may not. The decision depends on your level of risk aversion biggrin

How about take all the paperwork to the post office in a different car, sort the tax out, then go for the MoT? All assuming it does not need it for the tax.

If the V5 it his registered as "historic" and all the other paperwork is in order.
Get MOT go online and just TAX it. I did this last week without problem on a 1970 car that was SORN.

The new regulations do not start until the 20th. You will need an M.O.T if you want to tax it for this month. If you want to tax it from 1st June you will have to wait until after the 20th. Also I think you will need to fill in a form at the Post Office if it isn't already listed as a Historic vehicle on the V5.

It might be easiest follow him down to the MOT station, when it passes (there will be tears if it doesn't) I'll drive him to the PO and I'm I'm feeling generous drop him back off.

I believe it is listed as historic yes. It would be a lot easier to wait until the 20th and for me another 2 weeks when you've waited 15 years so far doesn't matter, but he wants the car yesterday 😁

Thanks all.
