Oops, NIP 86 in a 70
Discussion
Oops NIP for 86 in a 70. No points on license, never done an SAC. Alleged offence was less than a week ago.
No fixed speed cameras in the area, didn't pass any police cars. They do sometimes sit in a layby on the other carriageway, or there is a bridge, obviously I didn't see anything.
Is it worth asking for calibration etc or are they better at that these days?
I'm guessing I will likely be offered an SAC?
A35 in Dorset, dual carriageway, dry, moderate traffic.
Would 3 points likely affect insurance premiums? (15 yrs, 5 and 3yrs NCD on different policies)
Many thanks, James

Probably, but 86 is the upper threshold on the usually quoted table.I'm guessing I will likely be offered an SAC?

Unlikely to raise it by much, if anything. NCD is a very separate thing.I've just renewed my car insurance and I got an SP30 3pts and 100 pound fine back in October.
I'm in London do insurance is sky high anyway but was surprised at a mere £20 rise in premium due to conviction.
I would suspect that you will be offered a SAC. Cost £100 or so and no need to declare to most insurance companies although I know a few that do ask nowadays.

Do you get a choice of dates?
When I did one a few years back (not Dorset), I had a wide choice of venues and dates. It was cheaper than a ticket, it doesn't need declaring to insurers (except Admiral, the Ryanair of insurers, who I'll never use anyway), and ultimately I was bang to rights and would prefer several million similar offences not to be taken into consideration...jmsgld said:
Thanks for the speedy replies, I have always been curious about a SAC, I guess now I might find out...
I presume that if within guidelines SACs are usually offered as they generate revenue.

I had to do a SAC last March; dreaded it but it was actually an informative afternoon and the two lead instructors were decent (i.e. not pricks). Your experience may vary as my cousin had the opposite as his course was run by 2 ex-coppers. Much rather have the SAC than points though.I presume that if within guidelines SACs are usually offered as they generate revenue.

The one I did was very worthwhile, too.I wonder if your cousin's experience was coloured by his own attitude?

Nah he's a pretty easy going guy; apparently they were being antagonizing and trying to rile people up, calling people stupid and miseducated when they didn't know the answers to things like the various speed limits for a box van.I wonder if your cousin's experience was coloured by his own attitude?
If you haven't done a DAS in the last three years in Dorset you'll be able to do another one at 86MPH. It costs £110. Once you've returned the NIP declaring the driver you'll get another letter, offering you a DAS if you are suitable for one. If you want to do it, fill out the forms. They will ask for dates that you can't do over the next couple of months.
They'll sort one out at a site, they try and get you at one closer to your home address (it will have to be in Dorset, we aren't part of the national scheme).
Four hour course. Morning or afternoon. Tea and coffee on offer. Go in with a open mind and you'll enjoy it
.
Think thats everything!

From my personal experience, SAC are a bit of a farce, other than saving three points.
Mine focused on marginal speeding and how only a few mph over the limit results in a much longer stopping distance. If only they realised that a lorry or a bus doing 30 exactly would blow their theory out the water if it had to stop it an emergency.

For what it’s worth I don’t believe they did.

Sorry to be the voice of Doom but of late Dorset seem to be very reluctant to give out SACs. ..
I'm genuinely shocked that with the exception of the above post, its assumed 86 in a 70 gets an offer of speed awareness. I thought that would be well over the threshold and would be an automatic 3 points. I guess I'm out of touch with the thresholds.A900ss said:
