Back in my teen years they put one at the bottom of the hill where my mate lived, he proudly proclaimed one day that he had finally managed to get it into the triple figures... think he missed the point somewhat!

There's one near me in a 'village' (rather a collection of houses on a main road) which was until recently NSL but now has a 40mph limit.

If you're exceeding 40 it displays your speed and 'slow down' but doesn't (so I'm told) display any speed above 60, presumably to prevent people going for the record...

We have Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) in Dorset. I think they work well. There is one near a school thats on a hill. If you are over it has a sad face with your speed and slow down. If you are under its a smile and thank you.

I think these work better than camera signs which seem to be all over the place.

There's several in Warwickshire which trigger the '30 Slow Down' message at a speed of only 27mph. What effing use is that??

M20 had them between j8 and j7 for a while - however it also read your number plate and displayed it so you effectively got an instant leader board. smile

I'm not in Warks but I too have noticed that some have really been screwed down to either the posted limit or 3mph below, which would register as being on the limit in most cars.

There's loads of them in North Tyneside and Northumberland. The North Tyneside ones are annoying because they display a disapproving orange unhappy face when you're on the limit, but the Northumberland variety display a green happy face if you're at the limit. They seem to work though and as far as I've seen they're actually located where speeding is a danger.

This is 2018 not 1918 & few have any shame about anything let alone speeding.
These silly signs just make me laugh & are an utter waste of time & money.

There is one in a 40 zone near me that lights up with a 'slow down' at sub 30 mph speeds. I was following a tractor and it set it off...

No reply from the council when I emailed them.

Why don't they make them like those saucy tea mugs where the picture changes when they get hot.

They could depict an attractive young lady, and then the slower you go, the more clothes come off. smile

There's one near me going in to a 20 zone and they have placed the SPIDs sign actually in the 30 zone though. If you drive at 30 on the approach you get a sad face straight away from around 100-150 metres away.

Absolutely stupid 20 zone as well that most will quite happily sit at 40 through and there haven't been any collision in the village either, yet they site collisions along the stretch of road to justify the new 20 zone, cocks.

There's one near me warning you to "slow down" in a 40 limit. I've triggered it at 25mph. Laughable.

Yet police forces (at least Police Scotland) say that these types of signs are more effective at reducing speed than the presence of a cop with a laser. But seeing evidence in our village is difficult, as seeing a cop car is a rarity in itself, and cars coming off the dual carriageway into the village progress through the village (where the primary school is on the main road) at well over the 40mph then 30 mph limits. Our solution in the main street is to get people to stagger park there cars on both sides of the roads so that vehicles have to slow down. A previous cop speed check (5 years ago!) recorded one truck st 55mph in the 30 limit and a car at 65mph. We see the difference at weekends when cars are parked on the main street - speeds just dramatically increase to well above 30mph.

We've asked for speed humps etc but since the road is an "A" road, the council it can't be done. We think they're full of bullsh*t and just don't want to spend the money until someone is killed.

Yes and no. They're more useful that camera signs but do induce panic braking.

We had these in Western Australia, a huge LED sign showed your speed but oiks would mistake them for speed cameras so they'd panic brake when they saw their speed (these are the kind of oiks who think that the need to "watch the speedo constantly" is a defence for speeding tickets). I've seen a rear-ender caused directly by this.

We've got signs like this around where I live, when a 40 turns into a 30 zone there's a light up "30" sign that only lights up if you're doing more than 30. Its good too because about a mile up there's a speed camera.

I use these as a handy gauge of how accurate my car's speedo is - apparently '30' on the dash = 27 by the radar beer
