Coming back from Gatwick last night after a long day of work in Berlin, I was driving home and didn't notice the "smart" speed change to 60, I had been driving with my cruise on at 70mpg (although dash cam footage says 72mph) when I realised my error - celebrated by two flashes of a camera.

My fault, regardless of circumstances I should have noticed the speed change. What am I looking at? I have had a clean licence for 24 years.

I am gutted

You are looking at a faulty speedo if it is calibrated in mph rather than mpg.

The speedo should be indicating the same or a higher speed than your GPS if the car is at a steady speed.

That's why I prefer older cars that still have the speedo showing mph wink

You’ll be on the new Motorway Awareness course, where you can be patronised for four hours. If you are lucky there may be biscuits.

OP has a driving management computer. You set the auto-drive to the desired fuel economy and it adjusts the speed to suit. Just be glad you didn't put in 60mpg or you would have been going faster.

OP: That sucks, you have my sympathy. You should be offered a speed awareness course which will cost a half-day of your time and about the same price as a speeding ticket, but no points.

Next time just stay in Berlin overnight, visit one of those kinky sex clubs I've been reading about and come back refreshed the next day.

Had one earlier in the year and it wasn't so bad but if you are up to date on your highway code and understand how a motorway works you'll be a bit bored. Easiest way of entertaining yourself is to drink the free coffee, eat the free biscuits and then laugh at people who;

Still don't see why they should be there even though they were speeding
Still refuse to accept the fact that when the limit changes you must be doing that limit before going under the gantry
Still don't understand the concept of Lane 1,2,3 and what that means and that there is no such thing as a slow and fast lane (one woman though L1 was for Lorries and Caravans ONLY)
General ignorance on how to actually drive!

its just a typo... meant to be all mph.

Good to know about the course, might learn something new, might not, lets hope thats what comes through the post. Annoyed with myself as I drove back from Gatwick and slowed for all the other variable and fixed speed areas before that, just a momentary lapse being tired. Oh well... is what it is.

Sticks.

Perhaps it would be a good idea not to drive when so tired.

Tiredness kills.......- ?

Let's face it you are not (possibly) going to be punished because of your speed but the fact that you did not pay attention possibly due to tiredness.

Look on the upside, you could have been in a van and got points instead of a speed awareness course. Do they actually look at the car type for punishment??

Why? The speed limit for a van on the motorway is 70mph the same as a car. The speed limit for a van on a motorway variable limit of 60-mph is 60mph not 50mph.

Well, I believe their time is up, I still don’t have anything but lessons learnt, tyres are the wrong size for the car throwing the speedo out. Thanks to all who replied.

If the car is registered at your address, you may relax, if not e.g. a company car or lease potentially registered to a business - then they have a reasonable time to find you.

I'm a bit confused as to how your wrong sized tyres caused you not to notice the speed limit change? biggrin

I'm not saying I wasn't speeding because of the tyres, just thats why it was over the actual speed it registers on the dash (which was 72 instead of the 70 I thought I was doing) irrespective of tolerance allowed.

I got papped because I failed to notice the 10mph drop from 70 to 60

Anyway, car is home registered, not business or leased

Looks like you're good.

Hope you learn your lesson and remember that the safest place to focus your attention on is the signs above the motorway and not the road itself. rolleyes
