So I just had a low speed ding with a parked taxi in a car park.
No passengers in the taxi and wife with me.
No damage to my car and a cracked grill on his.

As there were no passengers, is this just treated like a normal case, or does it have to go through various bodies and insurers?

In theory you should always inform your insurers but I would offer a sensible sum to the taxi owner/driver for damage and move on.

That's my hope. A grille is under £100, so maybe a mobile dent/paint/repair plus a signed letter could be used and we all move on with life. It would almost certainly be cheaper than my excess.

My rear bumper does actually have some damage, but I'm not fussed. Just another scar to add to the many on it

You might get lucky and the taxi driver accepts a payment and simple fix. Could be expensive though if he wants it sorted properly - time off the road impacting his earnings etc...

Who's going to source this grille? Fit it? Pay for his lost earnings whilst it gets sorted?

You may get lucky in that he's happy to do it outside of insurance but it's unlikely to be cheaper than your excess.

What stops taxi driver taking cash for the repair and later claiming for other stuff?

Good reason to pay him by cheque or credit transfer.
