Hi some suggestions on what might happen here based on experiences of others:

In March I got caught by a mobile speed camera doing a 37 in a 30 on Feeder Road in Bristol if anyone knows it. This is my first offence in 25 years of driving. I was not offered the speed awareness course so paid the £100 and 3 points. This was a rear facing camera in a transit van that was parked in between other transit vans near the Auto Choice garage. From what I read online this appears to be in the threshold of a speed awareness course but wasn’t offered

Yesterday I received another speeding fine of 47 in a 40 at the end of th M32 Bristol where it drops from 60 signed to a 40 temp sign in about 20 yards. Anyway the offence was on the 24th of April but the notice of prosecution was 31st of May. Most probably due to the car being leased and them looking for the user of the car. This time I’ve been offered the speed awareness course. I’ve taken them up on their offer but do you think they won’t allow me to attend the course given I got caught twice in a few months. I’ve never done the course so I guess I’m allowed to go on one because i don’t have one registered in the last 3 years. Both offences registered by Avon and Somerset

I know we won’t really know until I get their reply but is usual to get Offered on the 2nd offence rather than the first? Will two Ina few months mean I automatically get the 3 points

I have no excuses. Thanks Most frustrating thing is that during the late 90s I owned a 205 gti 106gti 306 gti and a Williams Renault (pretty stupid looking back on it) got up to all sorts and not caught once even though I was young and stupid. Here I am the wrong side of 40 in a 1.4 with a possibility of 6 points in 2 months

Yes.

No.

You should expect a course offer. Alternatively, a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points.

Many thanks. I was offered the course on the second crime and I’ve posted the reply off today asking for the course. However it does say they will decide if I’m allowed the course once they receive my response. I guess my concern is that they’ll put my details in to their database and see I had another prosecution a few week previous to this one. I’d obviously prefer the course as getting by 6 points would not be good. Thanks for your reply

Makes no difference. Their business model would fail if they applied such a filter.

I thought the course was only offered if no previous course/points within the previous three years? Of course, this means the OP should have been offered the course first time round (if it’s within the course range for speed).

I didn’t know courses were offered for second/subsequent offences in the qualifying period (for want of a better phrase).

Not a dig/me being arsey, genuinely interested. So far I’ve not fallen foul of a speeding NIP since the courses were brought in as an option and it’s not something I ever come across at work as a DC.

I picked up a course for 82 on the motorway a few weeks ago. The only mention was no course option if you had attended one in the last 3 years.

This was my (mis)understanding, but agtlaw is in the business.

A clean licence is not a prerequisite for a course and more than one speed awareness course is available within 3 years. Motorway SAC. National SAC. NSAC 20. Do all three and you’ve avoided at least 9 points. Do another course in an area not on the national database.

It doesn't matter how many points you have, the only thing that stops you taking a course is if you've been on one in the past three years.

Thank you. That puts my mind at rest a little. Hopefully they’ll accept my request for the course and I’ll escape with the original 3 points for the first one.

Thank you everyone for your time

Cheers agtlaw. As I said, (fortunately) not something personally I’ve had to think about and not something I deal with at work.

Yep, hence my question. Better asking someone who knows, rather than relying on my (questionable) Google skills.

(Dons flameproof underpants and awaits the ire of those who think the police should know everything about everything.)

Was that with the average speed camera or on the bridge as you come down to Eastville? Just curious where they would have a mobile unit there?

The mobile one was on Feeder road. The second offence was the yellow average speed cameras at the bottom of the m32

Bristol is pretty dire for mobile speed cameras and also those stupid 20mph limits (some are warranted, others should be 30mph).

In any case, i've seen a mobile camera a large number of times in the lay-by on the left at the end of Filton Road before you enter the M32, here: https://goo.gl/maps/kemERwRuoo62

I thought I had been done here, but nothing has come in for 2 weeks. I suspect whilst I was doing a little more than 50, I probably wasn't massively over.I was merging into the 2+ lane and had accelerated a little to merge in front of another vehicle.

The biggest thing I learnt from my course was just how little the other drivers on the road know... they really are clueless, not even knowing what differentiates a dual carriage way from a single carriageway, nor the speed limits on either.

Also, how little hazard awareness they have
