My flame suit is at the ready on this one!

Stepdad has been t-boned at low speed in his car last week. The car is a write off and insurance have confirmed this through photos sent in by him. They’ve agreed to pay out, but no money has been paid to him yet.

He’s looking at a replacement car nigh on identical to his, but we’ve noticed it’s got some shonky ditchfinder tyres on it. He had literally just put 4 brand new Uniroyal Rainsports on his car a few weeks before it got crashed into. I’d just like to add all four wheels were undamaged in the smash, so no safety issues in my opinion.

So my question is... Would it be frowned upon to swap these near new Uniroyals off for some part worns (as long as they’re legal tread) before the car is collected at the end of the week? I can’t see a problem myself, unless there is some legal clause saying once they’ve agreed to pay out then the car in it’s entirety becomes their property?

Opinions?

If they have already inspected it, then no. There's always the chance they would have written down make/type or noted the tread depth.

If they haven't even looked at the car yet, then go for it. Just make sure the tread is legal.

Where do you think all the part worn tyres come from that are sold all over the country?
Obviously if any of the wheels have taken an impact, I wouldn't use those tyres but that's more cautious than most ebay sellers would be.

Technically, once they've agreed figures and you've agreed a price, you could be seen as "devaluing" their asset by swopping the tyres but its unlikely to get noticed, the car would be picked up by their salvage handler, usually just a bod who drives a truck, once it gets to the salvage yard the tyres would be swapped anyway.

Edit to say: I'd agree with J2da in that it is quite likely the tyre make & tread would be noted by the assessor, depends oin how brave you feel I guess!

No assessor has actually physically come out to it. They’ve written it off on the photos my Stepdad sent to them of the two RH doors, sill and B pillar caved in!

Where do you think they come from? They’re certainly not, in general, off insurance write offs.

I don't think I'd want tyres that had been shoved sideways that hard :?

I swapped the wheels on our Volvo S80 between it being written off and it being collected, never heard anything about it...

Around 2008 my car was wrote off due to pillar damage and a side impact of being hit by a crane. My car was wrote off but I took the alloys as they where nearly new aftermarkets. It was due to be scrapped and they said nothing when I asked for the wheels and tyres. I later realized that perhaps they wouldnt fit or look right on my new car, so sold them later to a guy with the same model as my car that had been wrote off.

Thinking about it, im not sure if I should have had the wheels but nothing was said when I told the salvage yard who had my car that I wanted the wheels.

I'd already have done it!

We actually asked the question of the insurers when a friend's car was written off, they said they didn't care as long as it had wheels and tyres.

If ever you spin a car on a trackday, do you promptly replace all the tyres?

Nice new battery (for an old failed one due for the dump), leather swapped, tyres, parrot etc.

Yup, and do two oil changes just to make sure.

Personally I would have changed them over without even thinking about it along with anything else that was better than the new car.

Definitely that.
When we scrapped my daughters Ka (a mercy killing) we drained the tank. Just take the feed off the fuel rail and turn the ignition on and let the fuel pump empty it. That filled her new car

They come from Germany, or any other country where they are replaced more regularly than people in the UK tend to do...
