Hi I did a really stupid thing - i was at a set of traffic lights and the ones 20 yrds ahead were green. Mine changed and the ones ahead had changed in that time but I didn't register untill i was literally driving through them. I had a rather stressful day at work and was thinking about othrr things rather than paying attention to the lights. I was mortified I put my hand up to apologise to the guy that was about to pull away from his junction by putting my hand up and putting hazards on and pulling off the road into a side road for a few moments to gather my thoughts. My question is that there is no red light cameras but if any of the cars around me had dash cams could that be used by the police if they were to hand it over to them.
I have never done that before and couldn't quite believe I had let my attention slip like that. Any opinions will be great

Probably yes, but unlikely. Not all DCW are actually wkers who report every indiscretion.

I'm sure you'll be fine, however it's happened now, you can't make it un-happen, so there is no point in worrying.

I did the same a year ago and was mortified at making such a basic mistake, but nothing came of it.

It was here: https://goo.gl/maps/3YgNoLgTETx.

The best you can do is learn from it. In my case, pay more attention, in your case, don't drive when you are too stressed to focus on driving.

Across the country that probably happens a thousand times a day. To err is human, but it normally takes two to collide.

Learn the lesson and move on. thumbup

I am sure lots of us have done, once. Or at least had the feeling we had done it.

You get the feeling something was not quite right, but are not sure if it was red or not - I am not talking about barrelling towards an amber and chancing it. Normally your checks show you the road is clear, so your attention to other hazards is probably working as it should.

I know at the fast roundabouts below or above M and A roads, I always check right before moving off or through green. These lights are on tight changeover times, and cars can be approaching at 40+, and some do chance it.

Done something similar myself a few years ago. Stopped for a red light at a pedestrian crossing, waited for the person to cross, then as soon as they reached the other side drove off without thinking while it was still red. Thankfully no red light camera or dash cam wker...

No harm done, you live and learn.

Slightly off topic, but do the police actually do anything about DCW footage?

I had a very, very drunk driver on my cyclecam some time ago. Contacted 101 to submit footage, apparently our local force policy is not to investigate footage unless an actual accident took place...

Theres a roundabout near me in Hampshire that has 4 sets of lights. I would say 1 in 4 times minimal the lights change attest one car goes on the red.

The, recent, thread below suggests that they do use the footage for purposes of an NIP.

Only if it's accompanied by a witness statement with the possibility the witness could have to attend court and give evidence so I suspect a lot of dashcam wkers might suddenly get amnesia when they realise it's not just upload and forget.

It says in that link the guy prosecuted has the witness's address , having seen some of the utter fruitcakes on youtube I'm not sure I'd want my name and address available to the guy I'd just given evidence against

It happens. I done it 6 months ago. Not stressed just totally happy id finished work for a full week. Driving and looked at a que of traffic on the otherside. "Wonder why there waiting. Fools" as i drove by james bond style may have seen the red light in my mirror... felt like an utter tool. Thing is its a light i stop at daily, kids press it and run away all thr time. Nothing ever came of it.
