There's a group of 4 of us due in France this weekend. One has to drop out because of health reasons so will be claiming back his accommodation on his insurance - it's past refund deadline.

We're travelling in one vehicle and have split the costs 4 x ways - He bought the tunnel (£200), one is covering the Tolls (roughly £200) and the remaining two are covering the fuel, again roughly £200 each.

Can he claim his £200 travel back from the insurance? the remaining three will still be travelling on the tunnel ticket as it's a non-refundable ticket.

Last time I bought travel insurance it came with some information about what can be claimed for. Just a thought.

I'd be wary of doing that as the insurance company will probably want to see evidence it was cancelled.

And if he claims but doesn't cancel, the insurance company might cancel it.

That's a good point, it is amendable at cost but not refundable so I suppose they could argue it could be amended to another date when he can travel.

We've offered to give him £50 each but he wanted to see what the insurance situation was first as he'll be claiming for his accommodation anyway. His logic being, if we'd all stuck £200 in a hat and then used that to pay for everything could he claim it back - the reality is he booked the tunnel ticket directly.
