Current situation

Two cars. One manual, one auto. I drive both because I have a full licence. Wife drives auto only because she has an auto only licence

By adding her as an additional driver to the manual, the quote comes down several hundred pounds. Obviously, it would be illegal for her to drive the car

However, the online quote generator does not give me the option of telling them my wife has an auto only licence. The only options are full UK licence and then various european and international licences

If I add her, she definitely won't be driving my manual.

Shall I add her and save the money?

How would she learn to drive a manual if you couldn’t add her to the insurance?

I’m assuming it’s still an option to insure someone so that you can give lessons in a manual car if they only have an automatic licence?

This,

Full Automatic is considered a provisional manual isn't it?

PH wife can drive but needs him or someone over 21 with a full licence for more than 3 years to be present.

And her automatic licence is valid as a provisional licence for other categories; surely this is an option on the quote engine?

Which site is this?

The Meerkats definitely ask for additional drivers.

Add her on, take her out in it to learn how to drive a manual.

Yes, there must be an option for provisional licence.

I didn't realise that a full auto licence doubled up as a manual provisional licence.

Wife is the main driver on the auto car. So if I downgrade her licence status to provisional, that will inevitably affect the premium adversely on the auto.

Will give them a call

To the person who quoted my OP in full. Get a life man, seriously.

But you would need to tell your insurer she is a learner for that car, surely.

How is this fraud, my 80 year old mum is on my insurance she will never drive the car but reduces my liability, Also I remember Martin Lewis classes himself as a director on his insurance as journalist is a higher premium, It is not illegal nor fraud, It will only potentially have issues if the op's wife does drive the car and has an accident

I suspect Martin Lewis is a director of a Ltd Company, so that he is not an employee of the company that hires him as a journalist, and therefore escapes some PAYE liabilities, but to place someone on the insurance who will not or cannot drive the car seems a bit dubious to me.

Its not dubious if you are complying with the T&C's. If there is no requirement for a named driver to actually drive the car once in a while, then there is no issue.

I'm named on my mother's insurance in case I ever need to drive her car for her. Its probably been a decade since I've needed to. I have no idea what me being on her insurance does to the cost, because it's not why I'm on it.

I'm also named on my wife's policy and can't remember the last time I drove her car. I prefer mine so I have no reason to, but I want to be insured just in case I need to.

You 80 year old mum probably has a full and valid licence for the vehicle you have added her onto.

The OP was asking about insuring someone with an automatic licence on a manual car - so effectively not a full licence for the vehicle just a provisional.

The OP has been looking for a way not to mislead the Insurers which is entirely different to what you describe. If adding them was simply to reduce the premium. Then, as with your 80 year old mum, if it came to light, it would depend if a court decided that it was misleading to say someone was an additional driver of car, who you knew would never drive it. If they did it's fraud. I think there is a good chance they would but very little chance that it would come to light.

And the OP is being totally honest in the information he is providing to the insurer (or he would do if the bloody website allowed him to give the answer he wants to give). The OP may wish to allow his wife to drive the manual car as a learner, accompanied by a suitably qualified driver. He is not saying that he WILL, and the insurer does not care.

Twig is one of the few people on this thread who actually works in motor insurance, and he has no problem with this scenario.

He would not, nor would I..because it is not his or my scenario.
However, the insurers are unaware OP has, in effect, a learner as his other named driver.

Of course they would be aware. The OP is trying his best to input the information into the quote system but the "computer says no". The OP also said yesterday afternoon that he was going to give them a call, but as it's Aviva he's probably still on hold.
