I've just bought a new taxi, well new to me, it's a 12 month old Toyota Prius +

It came to me on Monday, taxed until October and MOT until next June. Now I know the tax becomes immediately invalid after a change of owner.

However.... I received the new V5c in my name today and immediately assigned a private plate from a retention certificate on line.

My understanding is that as soon as reasonably practicable I must tax the Prius again or SORN it. I've just checked on line via the 'check if a vehicle is taxed' website and it correctly identifies the Prius under the private plate and taxed until October.

I thought I would have to wait for the new V5c with the private plate on it, and then tax it from the beginning of July. But apparently it's taxed until October!

Glitch in their system?

Would imagine so, I can't see the DVLA being either helpful or generous but incompetence is something they have 'previous' for.

Up to 5 days before it's updated.

Except it less than four working days and the new keeper V5c is on my desk and the plate transfer is instantaneous.

You would think the new keeper being generated on the V5c would put a marker against the tax?

I'm not arguing with you there but it came up on another thread with a car that was showing as untaxed still but had been taxed.

I’m confused on the MOT. You say it’s a 12 month old car but has MOT until June. It doesnt need an MOT until 3 years old??

It's a taxi , depending on the local authority they do a more stringent MOT every 6 months

As it happens, a Hackney Carriage must receive an MOT test not more than one year after first registration for use as a Hackney Carriage. That I believe to be a National law, not just a local authority law. For your info, a Hackney Carriage is not just a London black cab. It is a taxi that must have a roof light, a meter fitted and can have the word 'taxi' displayed on it. It may be hailed in the street and can park on a taxi rank to ply for hire where it is licensed. So for example a North Somerset Hackney Carriage cannot sit on a taxi rank or be hailed in the area of the City of Bristol. A Private Hire vehicle MUST be pre-booked, does not have to have a roof light or meter and cannot display the word 'taxi' on it anywhere.

As of five minutes ago, the Prius is still showing as taxed until 1st October and I am now in possession of the V5c with the private plate on it.

So not only has it changed owners, but also changed registration and is still showing as taxed.

It's not zero rated is it? If so, it could be that as no money is paid for the tax, it continues???????

How do you propose to spend this windfall of between zero and 83p a month?

It's a Prius + and is 96g/km which I work out to be £140 a year VED.

So I reckon I've ended up about £35 up!

I'll try not to let it change my life.

So, do you think that DVLA works on the basis that everyone knows they have to tax a car when they buy it and don't actually change anything? Relying on honesty.

I’ve had this with my new van, in fact it showed taxed until Jan 19.

I too was in possession of the V5 in my name but I could not tax it online, and the local Post Office chap couldn’t tax it either. I called DVLA once who told me it was taxed, despite explaining I am
the new keeper, so I tried again, constantly checking online in case it was untaxed (I was never) but the next imbecile said the same.

The third call I had to virtually, forcefully, get the operative to change the direct debt to my account. Even then he was saying “your van is taxed, you don’t need to tax it again”, and wasn’t listening. So, lord knows who’s account was paying for it whilst I sorted this but it wasn’t mine.

DD payments are now coming out so I am legitimate at least but, it seems that whatever the DVLA computer says, goes where phone operators are concerned. There are probably loads of people out there with “free” tax right now. Oh well biggrin
