Just looking for a bit of advice about anything I can do. As the title suggests, last night following a party my wallet fell out of my pocket in an Uber. The driver, who took over an hour to answer his phone said it wasn’t there.

I have reported it to the police but am a bit lost now as to what can be done.

Cancelled all debit/credit cards, but due to getting a cash deposit back from the disco light hire people I had over £250 cash.

Does anyone have any similar experiences and any advice?

How can you prove it fell out and not when getting in or out or elsewhere?

Not a lot can be done to be honest, unless... does the taxi have cameras and can you ask to see them?

Reported to Uber itself?

Bearing in mind that Uber driver's earn 2p or something so £250 is a lot of hours of driving, driver may have kept it Im afraid.

I found a new iPhone 7 in an Uber, and told driver, and his attitude was he’d return it, give it to me blah blah...

He then took a call and in French, agreed to sell it for £100. I reached over, took it back, swore at him in French, reported him to Uber and returned phone to the grateful owner.

Owner called driver immediately and I saw the calls coming in, all ignored

OP, based on this passenger could’ve found it, put in pocket, driver unaware.

Yep, reported to Uber via their customer services and which appears to be based in the US.

I fear you may be right, especially annoying as I don’t normally carry cash and I have the feeling a wallet without cash in would be more likely to be returned. But as it is I have lost all my cards and driving license.

This is my only idea to be honest, but it’s proving very difficult to get in contact with the driver again this morning and Uber customer services apparently can’t put me through to him.

It’s making me think twice about using Uber again and in future I think I will use a private taxi firm because there is at least some accountability.

I think I’ll have to put this down as an expensive learning curve.

Contact the driver again, ask him to contact his other fares and tell them whoever has it can keep the £250 as a reward but return the wallet/id/cards.

The driver probably stole it... give him a way to save face and give it back. Accept the money is long gone... absoolute best result at this point is everything else coming back.

And the result could have been exactly the same. Just because you've used uber, isn't any different.

It could well have been I agree, however I would at least be able to get through to their office and have the chance to try.

I accept it was carelessness on my part to leave the wallet in the taxi, but I feel I need to try and get it back despite the slim chances.

Thanks all for the suggestions above, I think I’ll try the reward approach in th hope I at least get my cards etc returned.

In your first post you say that your wallet fell out of your pocket in the Uber taxi, and now you say you were careless to leave your wallet in the Uber taxi. That implies that you were aware your wallet had fallen out in the taxi, and simply didn't put it back in your pocket (it could hardly be carelessness to have failed to react to something that you weren't aware had happened!)

If however, you weren't aware your wallet had fallen out, how do you know that it didn't fall out before you got into the taxi, or after you'd got out of the taxi? confused

At which point did you become aware that your wallet was missing? - Immediately after getting out of the taxi?, or some time later? (such as when you woke up next?)

As per bold above, OP was completely drunk and out of it. Who knows where the wallet is. The £250 probably ended up with a stripper hehe

To clear this up, yes I was slightly drunk...

My wife had my wallet in her handbag and passed it To me whilst in the taxi, I then thought I put it in my back pocket, but obviously not far enough in.

I realised as soon as I got in the front door that it wasn’t there and after looking at the 10m walk I had from the taxi to door and not finding it, I realised i had left it/dropped it/it had dropped out of my pocket in said taxi.

Not sure this can be blamed on Uber?

The self-employed driver may be to blame.

The next passenger may be to blame.

I do feel for you, I hate losing my wallet but only ever left my front door key in a minicab (that was a pain though, had to break into the rented house I was in)

laugh that £250 will be going into Uber's pockets as loan re-payment for the car they provide to their non-self-employed drivers.

You should sue VW. If the taxi wasn’t a VW, sue them anyway.

I’ve still not been able to get in contact with the driver today and nothing has been handed in at a police station, so doesn’t look like I’ll get my cards back.

I’ve written off ever seeing the cash again but was quietly hoping I might get the wallet back.

So glad you said that, OP is forever starting posts on here about losing a wallet...

He must to it once a week at least, each time increasing the amount of cash in it, and needed just that perfect bit of wisdom you have so kindly imparted.
