Morning all

it would appear that I strayed into a bus lane
(I'm told they have a lovely picture of me & my car)

I'm completely in the dark as to any rules & regs on bus lanes (other than don't go in them..)

FWIW, I was on the A312, heading out of Northalt, towards the M40
Transgression was literally the last section before the roundabout on the M40

Pay up & shut up ?

or are these things worth appealing?

Haven’t they given you pictures? No harm in appealing, they should then re offer the reduced fine.

What's the fine? Normally a pay up and shut up thing as it's usually a slam dunk from their end!

Edit - Presumably you meant the A40! Anywho assume it was here, timed lanes, if you are outside the time, appeal, if you aren't, don't!

Not always... Sometimes bus lanes aren't signed and marked correctly. I had one such incident in Kingston upon Thames where the bus lane times change halfway along the road, and the change wasn't signed properly. I continued (unaware) into the now restricted section and moved out of the bus lane at the point where it was first correctly signed.

Kingston council refused my appeal (and then went and repainted/signed the bus lane as per the details I provided in my appeal....) and it went all the way to the TFL adjudicator where I won.

I had a similar case with Newham Council over a bus gate infringement. I also won at tribunal AFTER they changed the signage.

yes, you are perfectly correct - its the A40 there, not the M40
There is no denying that I was in the bus lane

(didn't know the area, didn't see any signage; but having gone past it since, it is signed, but not what I would class as 'clearly'.)

Link to google streetview so we can take a look? The markings have to be correct for them to fine you.

All fair points but they feel like the exception rather than the rule!

Not sure I agree about it not being clear, look again at the Google Maps link I sent, it doesn't get much clearer IMHO...

Anyone else find most people keep out of bus lanes, even in the times when they are not operative. And then give you disapproving looks when you are in one.

Yup we have a timed one in MK, I once had an angry cyclist yell at me over it, he went red and rather sheepish when I pointed at the sign!

I call those people "idiots" and their opinion is of no consequence to me laugh

Well you say that... but despite not being too far off, the signage on that bus lane isn't correct.

http://penaltychargenotice.co.uk/bus-lanes/signs-a...

Note the distance from the first sign to the start of the bus lane, the lack of the correct sign at the first junction, the incorrect positioning of the sign after the first junction.

The road markings are also in a terrible state.

Not sure you'd win on that basis, but the signage is definitely not quite right!

I've also looked on google maps
I'd agree it looks very straightforward from what you can see !
I have a vague recollection that there are trees covering the blue sign.
I'll be driving past it again today so will take a closer look

yes I have to suppress my desire to burst out laughing.
I'm quite a fan of part time bus lanes as they frequently give me a reserved lane all to myself.
For me that is ample compensation for censure by the brain dead. smile

Get your employer to pay, they are paying for your time on here!
(Unless you are one of these powerfully-built company directors people keep mentioning).

In West London where I am (not far from Northolt, the scene of this crime), there are miles of bus lanes that at quite clearly marked 7-10am, 4-7pm, Monday to Friday. The bloody things are ALWAYS empty....apart from me.

I hate bus lanes. For them to make any sense then it should be able to show they carry about the same number of people as the other lanes. (Not vehicles people) Otherwise they are part of the problem. "Well if we improve traffic flow for public transport surely more people will use it" has certainly had its chance to get everyone off the road.

There definitely needs to be better signage, why not lights when they are in force? I find myself in a quandary a lot of the time. A few like this near me, if the traffic is slow moving it's easy but if it's going along at about 20+, which it often is, then I become part of the problem as I know the HWC says I should keep to the left but shouldn't really be passing. Moving to the nearside lane is an option but you end up running up against buses, cycles and parked vehicles and having to keep rejoining the offside which achieves little other than to make everyone's life just a little more complex than it need be and taking longer. Of course you also have to contend with the offside drones who want to turn left. Then of course I may be holding up people who are less conflicted than me and happy to mooch up the nearside.

I am surprised I make it out of the door sometimes, tongue out
