There is a camera locally that was red light and now speed as well, as someone I know found out a year or so ago. The giveaway was the measurement markings but the police website listed as speed only.

Its be red light over 10 years but amount of people who chance it is unreal.

Last night it changed to amber and I don't even risk it, but a Q5 further back than me gunned it in the other lane.

My question is the loops appear to be embedded in the road and watching dash cam back at home it changes to red before the q5 hit the loops. Will there be any grace period or is it more or less certain she will get a ticket as I know the driver?

There will be a short delay between the lights changing to red and the system becoming armed.

I believe there is a 0.9 second delay from the lights changing to the camera becoming active at 1 second.

There must be. Assuming it's unsafe to stop on amber then you cannot always stop the instant the lights turn red.
Also depends on speed limit and light phase timings.
What is the speed limit at that location OP?

The local police told me this after I found myself in a predicament about a red light cam*

  • Camera-equipped light-controlled junction, no yellow box, i went through on green at 5mph with the traffic but the numpty to my left decided to cut me up and stop for a bit, meaning the light was red a few seconds before I left the junction.

The offence is committed if any part of a vehicle passes beyond the stop line with the red light showing.

It's not a light signal offence to exit the junction at any point with the red light showing, as long as the stop line was cleared on green.

Limit is 30 but its two lane and about 100 yards before the camera its 40.

I don't think you've quite got that right. You are supposed to drive at a speed through lights so you can stop in the amber period, before it goes red. The amber means stop. You can go through on amber if you couldn't safely stop, but you can't go through on red without it being an offence.

Cleared (by the entire car) or part of the car has past the line?

Seeing way to much of this recently, where the person in front slows the person behind is impatient and uses the other lane to go through on red.

Actually it happened last Friday to me. I just do not get it.

Those dashcam pictures prove that it was not even a "slight" amber.

So doing some sums(eeek), assuming a 2 second amber...

At 50mph, total stopping distance around 175ft (assuming HC stopping distances), distance travelled in 2 seconds 147 feet. So at some point you will be between 147 and 175 feet away, the light will turn to amber and you'll go through on red.

The amber only phase needs to be 3.0s +/- 0.25s.

Joke is I would have made it through but the sliver fiesta in front me went 30 in the 40 then the amber came on and she gunned it. She had time to make it but the Q5 came out of nowhere and I know the speed camera works as seen a ticket for 37mph.

Many locals stay right like I have as the left lane is urban clearway 7-45 to like 8.45am and the 17.17 to 17.45 (it was passed 17.45) or some silly hours and so if you keep in left you end up stuff up a parked car.

I thought it was widely agreed that HC stopping distances were about 50 years out of date. You can’t use them to make a point when it suits you and deride them as too high the rest of the time.
