Hi,

Stupidly got caught speeding in a 30 by a copper standing with a speed gun going into town the other day. Luckily I was slowing down because a taxi gave me the heads up (it's a known spot but I haven't seen a copper there for a long time), so it can't have been over by a huge amount.

However, I've received a Section 172 notice today, asking if I was the driver etc.

I got 3 points a few months ago and just fessed up, paid the £100 and 3 points.

Was wondering if there are any worthwhile alternatives, solicitors, etc? If so, would I speak to one now or after I've filled in the S172?

Cheers & happy motoring.

Avoiding the points ideally.

If you were speeding in a 30, slowed right down because of a taxi, and even so were still doing well over 30 then I suggest you need another 3 points and also to revise your driving style.

Don't speed excessively in towns and villages. You actually don't get anywhere much quicker. There is still plenty of open road to enjoy.

AGT Law is a motoring barrister and posts here sometimes.

But this seems to be a plain English guide:

You may be offered a speed awareness course depending on the speed, whether you've had one in the last 3 years etc.
