I'm taking my car to a classic car event in the Alps this weekend. There will be some non competitive driving events on public roads. Do I need to inform my insurance company? Do I need extra specialist insurance? Rallies and competitions are not allowed on my policy.

There's two separate questions here...

First is whether this is an event you need to tell 'em about. Location is irrelevant.
Second is whether you need to tell 'em you're going abroad. Event is irrelevant.

You don't NEED to tell 'em you're going abroad, they have to cover you within most "normal" destinations. BUT that's only third-party legal minimum. If you want your normal full cover, then you might need to tell 'em, and they might limit the time - look at your policy. Or... ring 'em.

As far as the event goes, if it was in the Pennines rather than the Alps, would you even consider telling 'em? Sounds like just a convoy drive as part of a meeting. Not really what they mean by "rallies". I never bother.
