I have received a V5c for a car that does not below to me and it doesn't have my name but has my full address - what do I do with it?

Quick look around tonight to see if you can spot the car it might be a typo. More likely is it’s an attempt to avoid parking, congestion and speeding fines or it’s a crime pool car. If you don’t spot it return the V5 to DVLA with an explanation and keep copies.

What car is it? New old, go fast?

Have a look at this thread - https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... - basically call the DVLA and go through the cars/bikes you do own, they'll ask you to put it in writing and you'll be disassociated from this other one.

I had a previous tenants car still registered to our previous place. Eventually the DVLA wanted it to be taxed obviously, eventually I got told it needed to go to the special cases department, I had the address somewhere, but in the first instance ring the DVLA.

You need to pray you get through to someone that has some grey matter though, the first few times I called them they could not understand the situation....which just peeved me even more. The other issue at play here is that most of the time they want the number plate, but you cannot open the letter to find that....eventually someone with a little common sense from the DVLA told me to open it anyway so at least we could get somewhere and send it to the above department explaining the situation with a letter.

Sold a car, then had a text a week later to ask if I had already sent off the log book. Turns out he’d put down his old address without thinking. Perhaps something similar has happened here?

I know the names of all the previous owners of this property and have been here since 2011 anyway so it's not that - there have been a couple of instances where a house down the road has a similar name beginning with the same letter - so address is picked incorrectly from the drop down of properties under the same postcode - but I am 99.9% sure it has nothing to do with that property either and I am fairly sure it has nothing to do with any other property on the road.

better ring up the DVLA I suppose.

There's a certain element of society that has a bit of a habit of not taxing and insuring their vehicles, when they buy the car they try to make off with the full V5, so that the previous owner still technically has the car. If that's not possible then they give someone else's address to make the vehicle untraceable. I recall there was a case many years ago where an entire private hire taxi firm had all it's vehicles registered to an old man 200 miles away.

If the vehicles are expensive, they try to intercept the DVLA letter OR they come around and ask for it in person (a little bit like the new mobile phone scam).

"If you’ve received mail which has your address, but not your name, this is because we deliver to addresses rather than names. If this does happen, you can put a cross through the address and write 'Not known at this address' or 'No longer lives here' and put it back in a letterbox. Where possible, we’ll return the item to the sender hopefully allowing them to update their records."
