Letter from local roads authority (Amey) about accident
Discussion
Hi folks,
I received a letter yesterday from Amey (local roads authority etc) stating that either I had damaged crown property or that a clean up of property was required following an accident. I was very shocked when I first saw it but then reading through the details it did relate to an accident I was in almost a year ago where someone went into the back side of me on a motorway.
Has anyone any experience of these its asking for details of the accident and says that I may be liable for charges!

And while you’re talking to them, ask them to settle my invoice for the damage that their road caused to my car....
Amazing that they can try to claim from the OP when the accident was just that, an accident, but they can try to worm out of paying for damage to my car when they knew about the state of the road that i had the misfortune of driving over
Two sets of rules.....

Hah! They make a fortune off 3rd party accident damage as well. The rates they work to for the Highways agency are SO slim, they have to subsidise the costs by grossly overstating costs to the insurers when damaged during accidents (think 400-500% cost increase). Murky world etc.
I managed to claim off Skanska for road damage after it transpired they had cut corners repairing a pot hole. My freedom of information request revealed they only got paid £18 a pot hole repair!!

Had a letter from Amey once telling me I had to cut a tree back because a bin lorry had broken a wing mirror on it and had to pay compensation.
Politely enquired which tree of mine was hit as the only tree we have near the road is past the further point the bin lorries go (it's a dead end road).
Their response was they wrote to everyone with trees nearby!

Wife had an accident a couple if weeks ago, young lad cut across her path turning right, all on cam so easily settled. Whilst parked up waiting for recovery, a Amey van arrived with two blokes onboard, one started sweeping the mess up, second took pictures of the scene and cars involved, sure enough few days later a letter arrived asking for details and who in her opinion was at fault.
Everything needs paying for.

Thanks for the replies, there was no damage to any barriers or the road, nor did any car contact them - the only debris was a reg plate and plastic, I don’t remember that being cleared up as I was there some time, I’d be very curious to know what the charges are.
Yes my insurers delt with it at the time so I’ll pass it on.

In our area after an RTC if there was debris thenEverything needs paying for.
a) Police who attended would clean it if negligible ( traffic cars had brushes etc on board)
b) if more debris then highways would be called to clear it.
I worked in our Ops room and one day had a call from a supervisor/foreman in highways. A farmer had left mud on a road and highways cleaned it. He was asking for a police officer to go to the farmer to get money for the cost! He was politely (yes) advised to seek civil compensation via his legal dept and courts if necessary as it was NOT a police job. Forgot to add it was police who requested clean up due to unsafe road condition after complaints by motorists. Highways were aware but insisted a police officer assess the road first and then call them. It was to save them sending someone out but police could do it for free!

Yep, not surprised by that at all. I get that they need to pay for damage somehow, but also get the impression they'll chance their luck wherever possible.Politely enquired which tree of mine was hit as the only tree we have near the road is past the further point the bin lorries go (it's a dead end road).

Years ago I was hit by an uninsured driver, both cars written off and they ended up wiping out some barriers outside a school at the same time. Police and witness determined the other party (who'd f
ked off sharpish) were 100% at fault, yet about 6 months down the line I get a letter out of the blue from the local council asking me to pay £500 for repairs to the barriers.Zetec-S said:

Police were called by passing traffic - and had to stay until the car was recovered because it blocked a lane. The policeman took at look at the barrier and confirmed that there was no damage (without us asking) so never heard anything about barrier repairs.

I had an ‘invoice’ for clearing up after an accident I had - it was sent within a week of the incident, and obviously way before any blame was apportioned.
I just sent it to my ins co and wrote to the council to send all correspondence to them.
I think it was for £150.
I happened to go back to the scene the next day and found the ‘clean up’ consisted of just sweeping the bright orange fibre glass onto the grass verge.
There was even still half my front splitter there - hardly what you’d call a clean up...
