I'm a British citizen residing in the UK since Jan 2018, holding a German driving license which is valid until 2030.

What happens were I to get points for speeding (not that I expect any soon or intend to get any)? What happens say if I had run up 6 points and I then traded my German license in for a UK license, do they get transferred somehow?

German licenses don't have a "points" system, but I understand the UK will create a "temporary" UK license for foreign drivers who receive British penalty points.

To accept a Fixed Penalty, you'd need to [temporarily] surrender your German licence.

A virtual licence / driver's record would be created by DVLA onto which any penalty points would be added.

If you accumulated 12 or more penalty points in a 3 year period, you'd be liable to be disqualified from driving in GB for at least 6 months.

You've never had a UK licence?

"Foreign driver" isn't anything to do with nationality of the person. It's everything to do with who issued the licence. If you've held a UK licence before, then DVLA will already have a record for you - but if not, they'll create one.

OK cool, that makes sense. I just wasnt sure how it worked. I've not had a speeding ticket since I was 17 and learning to drive, don't intend to any time soon biggrin

Yeah, I had held one but it since expired as I took a German license instead.

I hadn't considered what you said, that actually i'd still be on their system none the less. Suppose it makes sense.

You mean your photocard expired? Your actual licence doesn't expire until your 70th birthday.
