I passed a handheld speed scanner at 40 in a 30.

Yeah as the title says I passed a speed gun at an indicated 40 in a 30mph limit. I was driving back from town after morning rush hour on a road that is usually 40, but there is some long running roadworks and there is a temporarily enforced speed limit of 30 displayed with fold up signs.
I was fully aware that I was going quicker than this and doing (indicated) 40 through the roadworks since the road was very quiet, so if they get me, then so be it, unlucky. I'm certainly going to be more careful and observe signs in the future.
Anyway as I'm driving down I see a gent in a hi-viz coat 25 metres away with a speed measuring device with 2 lenses and give it a quick stab on the brakes to get down to 30 pointless I know as he's probably been watching me 1/4 a km down the road anyway. He lowers the device just after I spotted him.
Maybe I was doing less than 40 on the speedo at some point but I almost certainly touched 40 at some point. I didn't get pulled over though further down the road I did notice a camera van parked up on the opposite carriageway. I heard that with these laser devices they will pull you most of the time but a letter in the post isn't completely ruled out though I don't know for certain.
What do you think, have I gotten off lucky or should I expect a letter? Something tells me the fella with the gun was simply making a presence to make people aware that the vans are about, but I guess all I can do is wait it out for a couple of weeks?

Was it a police officer or roadworks staff keeping an eye on vehicles within the roadworks?
If it was Police then you will have to wait 14 days to find out if you are the registered keeper. Police usually stop at the roadside and report with hand held laser but they don't have to. Some lasers also have built in cameras for processing later on without the need to stop each vehicle.Such as the Tru Cam

Looks like a similar camera to the one you describe and thought the comment may be of interest. I do wonder whether this may be because they were operating outside of a "marked" location (I don't know if they were or not).
