In January, I was surprised to receive a letter from my insurers, asking for details of the crash.

Rang them.

I was on the road at the time, although there was no crash.
Insurers wouldn’t give me any details of this beyond I was supposed to have rear ended a BMW.
Insurers accepted I knew nothing of this and sent an assessor to check both cars to see if the crash had happened.
Insurers said they would be contesting any claim as my car had no damage and obviously hadn’t been repaired.

July renewal. Insurance premium doubled – despite 65% protected no claims.
Insurers said the raise was due to the “pending claim”.
They said they would check with other side if they would drop it, but keep saying they must give them longer to answer.
They told me that a pending claim could only last for 6 months. However, they are now saying it could last for 6 years.

What can I do?

This has happened to a few people on here and has stretched over several years.

In short there is nothing you can do but press your insurance company to sort it.

As they wont give you details of the 3rd party you can't chase them.

I'd like to think you will be reimburssed for any over payment but I wouldn't bank on it.

Thank you Dave.

Is there anything I can do to encourage them to deal with it?

It sounds ridiculous but try twitter.

I have just had a merry go round with a bank.
Ended up tweeting a sarcastic tweet to them.

All sorted in a day after 3 weeks of getting nowhere.

You have to contact the financial ombudsman service to put a claim against insurers as they are acting unreasonably. Your car was not involved in an accident, so your premium should not be affected whilst the insurers investigate. Insurers already agreed that your car was not involved so they really have no justification to charge you as they are. The ombudsman service is good and fair. You should get your money back if you are entitled to and have a clean sheet on insurance database.

I have dealt with the ombudsman on 3 occasions and their investing various were thorough and fair on all occasions. 2 in my favour, one not but I accepted their explanations.
