Do we need some of these, rather than speed cameras? I've seen more red light runners causing near miss situations than any number of 'speeders'... thoughts, people?

So long as they get rid of as many speed cameras (particularly average ones with dumb limits enforced) as they add 'red ligh' ones - they can go to town on red light ones as far as I am concerned.

However, I would never encourage anymore ways the state can fine us tbh. Asking for more state monitoring is turkey voting for Xmas time in my view.

Having said that, our 'second ammendment' moment came and went some time ago so we all fked anyway.

Be careful what you wish for - I've noticed a few places lately where they have speed and red light cameras on the same lights, so I guess you could pick up double points if you accelerate through them!

Yep! I'd prefer more red light cameras than speed cameras.

In Qatar, almost every set of traffic lights had red light cameras, with these came huge fines (£1200) if you broke a red light. Compared with speed cameras (£150 fine) that no one really gave a toss about, these are a much better idea in terms of road safety imo

Of course! Try using the roundabout above M40 J4 if you're in any doubt.

I saw an old boy paying zero attention Sail through a red yesterday causing a large aggregates tipper lorry to slam on. Not a care in the world and didn’t even notice!

That said, a camera wouldn’t have stopped the incident and as someone who has had the dubious pleasure of losing in court over a red light offence when I crossed to make room for an ambulance, I would say no I don’t want more red light cameras. frown

Cameras that detect and fine people who aren't paying attention when the lights change would get my vote.

Oh yes, I would vote for more red light cameras. Seeing incidents more and more.

Fat bearded loser in an Octavia VRS estate yesterday, what a dick.

My wife makes a big issue of pretty much everything these days (going through the change), what she forgets, and I take great pleasure in reminding her is that she got flashed by a red light camera. She refused the offer of a course and it was £100 fine and £100 extra on the insurance.

Of course when the letter came she automatically handed it to me, on checking the time and date I swiftly returned it.laugh

Wouldn’t it?
What if every traffic light head had a camera in it?
The old boy may pay more attention if great wedges of his pension was being spent on being care-free at every traffic light junction.now there’s an idea. smile

I saw a weird one last week.

A BMW bimbled through a red light and if they had been going any slower would have been collected

by the cars starting off from the left ,saw one of the 3 lanes had to check back before pulling off.

I was on foot and said "WTF ?" out loud at it.

Only if it's written into law that there's an exception for letting emergency vehicles through. Has to be a legally defined reasonable grace period too, otherwise there'll be more accidents from people slamming on when the light goes amber.

No. If the potential for having an accident isn't enough to make him stop at a red light I highly doubt a fine will have much effect. Besides which, people like that don't go through red lights on purpose.

Cameras would stop those who try and race through but they do so in the full knowledge of what they're doing. There is literally nothing that will stop those not paying attention going through as, by definition, they're not paying attention. Much the same as speed limits don't prevent people not looking properly and pulling out of a side road right in front of you.

More RLC suits me, but don't expect people to go through red lights for emergency vehicles.

They shouldn't be going through red lights for any emergency vehicle unless instructed to do so by a Police Officer.

All of the emergency vehicle drivers should know this, and shouldn't try to bully drivers out of their way at a red light, but instead should switch off their sirens and wait for the light to turn green, and traffic to safely move out of their way.

(Where I live though, I have seen both ambulances and fire engines come up behind vehicles stopped at a red light, leave their sirens on, and slowly roll right up behind the vehicles, to "encourage" them [i.e bully them] to move out of the way, including going through a red light).

I would quite happily outlaw all CCTV, dash cams, speed cameras, bus lane cameras, red light cameras and any other monitoring device.

If it's safe to do so, and it often is, I don't think that bureaucracy should deter people from potentially saving a life! This is why absolute offences are a nonsense. There are plenty of road layouts where a car can trundle a few ft across the stop line without causing any issue, but an emergency vehicle can get stuck behind them if they wait. Likewise, if I'm on a road with an emergency vehicle vehicle behind me, and stopping will not enable them to easily pass, I'll try and match their speed instead. I've done 60 mph in a 40 before, doing that. Of course, not doing anything dangerous, just illegal. And I pulled over at the first opportunity.
Priorities:
  • Safety of myself and others
  • Legality
  • Making Progress
If I ever get done for aiding an emergency vehicle, I won't change how I behave for an ambulance, or the fire service. But a police car? evil
