I bought a locking nut off eBay, the seller sent me an empty envelope. After raising cases and going nowhere I finally get instructions off eBay customer service I need to report the crime to get a refund.

Is this correct, bit is 25 quid will the police just fob me off...

I don't use ebay any more, they are a law unto themselves.

Try Amazon next time, much better customer service.

Just raise a normal eBay return.
Return the empty envelope using the tracking option (which you have to do when returning stuff).

You'll always get a refund.

Unfortunately too late but would have if known what a hassle it is

Just report it as "not delivered". EBay will ask the seller for the trackable courier service code. When the seller is unable to provide this - because there is no seller that will spend £10 on a trackable service for a £25 sale, you'll automatically win and will be refunded.

And if, by chance, it was tracked, the receipt should have details of the weight of the package, which would clearly demonstrate that the item could not have been included.

eBay will just want the crime number , police won't do anything unless he's doing it regularly but if you "forget it and move on" he'll just carry on getting away with it.

Some years ago my eBay account was hacked at 1am , somebody bought £700 worth of stuff before I could change the password , they'd changed my address to one in Florida , I got the money back from PayPal but thought I'd send the sheriff of the town a message

Within a few hours I'd been assigned a case number and had an email from a detective asking for details , next morning I got another email telling me it was a drop box rented by somebody outside the US so that's as far as they could take it but they'd shut it down and seized goods

A bit different to the UK approach

Amazon have a one call resolution policy, eBay really do take the p*ss these days.

Have you reported stuff missing before? I read somewhere else that they ramp up the hassle they put you to if you've reported a couple of things missing.

What car was the locking nut for - I assume you mean a wheel nut key? Is £25 a normal price for these? I had to buy one the other day from a Honda dealer - it was 8 quid.

I finally got a refund, I basically said the police said action fraud was enough. I guess it is who you speak to. It was a locking wheel nut ended, ended up paying 50 quid to get them all removed.

Funnily enough I've just had a 'not received item', case against me for something I sold, I didn't add a tracking number on ebay, but it was a tracked delivery and showing as delivered, second time in a row now, same modus operandi.

There are people very aware of how eBay works in refunds, interesting all my eBay problems have been eastern European names, a coincidence? Who knows, but going to close my eBay account it really isn't worth it anymore.

Buying use e-bay it's weighted heavily in your favour.

Selling use gumtree, facebook market place, Amazon and cash only collection when possible etc etc

What point would there be in sending an empty envelope? Was it recorded delivery?

Well that was what I was hinting toward, but there's also the fact it's that time of year again where the PO hires temp staff and stuff has a habit of disappearing in the post, especially anything small and heavy or anything that ticks.

I had some clips, I bought from the US on Ebay (USPS) shown as delivered by Royal Mail. They weren't - Royal Mail say Seller has to chase USPS who then chase them. I contacted seller, big company no issues, I am sure not their fault. They contacted USPS who said nothing can be done as shown delivered. Just re-ordered and received in the end. But would have been annoying if it had been valuable.

Was it intentionally empty, or did it look like the contents had been intercepted?

Try to keep eBay as cash on collection stuff, but have a load of odds and sods that are worth money but not that much, anyone tried this schpock thing that's being heavily advertised?
