I need to remove the front bumper on my x type jaguar to replace the headlight bulbs but due to time issues i may not have time to replace the bumper before i need to drive the car ! question is can i drive the car with the bumper removed there will be nothing protrubing out the front of the car.

You can usually replace the bulbs in situ if you have slender fingers, any police driving past will pull you (especially with no front number plate) and may get your car recovered if they consider it to be unroadworthy.

Aside from missing a number plate, wouldn't it invalidate the insurance as the bumper is an integral part of the car's crash resistance, especially for pedestrians?

Most 'bumpers' are a flimsy plastic moulding whose sole purpose is to shatter on the slightest impact and provide more profit for the dealer and manufacturer. <<cynic mode off>>

Unless you are unlucky with rusty screws, removing the bumper is the easy part. Arrange some cardboard and a blanket to avoid damage. Separating the multi plugs can be very painful. Then there are the headlamps themselves ... .

FFS what a palaver. Is it easier on the equivalent Mondeo?

I've driven past a stationary police car parked at a right angle to the side of the road without a rear bumper on my car. The officer just watched me drive past, but the rear reg. plate was on the tailgate so I wasn't missing a rear plate.

It's possible that your car would not be deemed roadworthy by a fussy police officer, as there will be plenty of sharp edges that would normally be covered by the bumper

If the man who drives the ‘bus’ through bandit country from Tbilisi to Vladikavkaz doesn’t bother with a front bumper, why would you?

Not sure it's about being fussy at all, would you rather have your legs taken from underneath you by a flexible absorbable bumper or a steel subframe

I often see old MGs and Triumphs from the 1970s both for sale and being driven around with no bumpers fitted. Registration plates fitted though.

On modern cars the bumpers are often very deep and have chin spoilers integral to them so are a bit more obvious with them missing!

Ha - beat you to it smile

You will almost certainly have to Dremel off some of the fixing screws - particularly if the bumper hasn't been removed recently.

It's possible to replace the bulbs without removing the bumper - just a bit fiddly. Remove the battery box to gain better access to the LH bulbs....
