Just thinking out loud, I SORN'd one of my cars for the winter on November 4th and as we know the DVLA will only refund you from the start of the next month ie December so in theory I am paying for the car to be taxed until the end of November.

I don't want to but if I drove it beyond the 4th up to the end of November and was stopped or picked up on ANPR anytime up to the end of November would I still be legal?

I am assuming SORN overrides the fact the VED is paid to the end of the month.

I know I should have SORN'd it the last day of October to stop those nasty people at the DVLA getting an extra months VED.

No.

SORN applies from the day.

The fact the DVLA will only refund you in whole months is a different matter.

Its a crap system. Especially when I swap between a couple of cars and have to prat about at the end of the month.

UK uses a whole month tax system, no idea why they don't do the same as elsewhere where it is per day.

They changed when they abolished the paper disc and it was a way of making more money.

I read up to £19m pa or so, but apparently it was costing them more than that with lost revenue from untaxed cars with drivers taking a chance of not getting caught with the need to no longer display the tax disc in the car.

Not sure how true all that is but it must be cos I read it on the internet.

I guess even though the tax has been paid, the vehicle has been declared SORN, so the tax has been cancelled (although not refunded).

I suppose if a vehicle is SORN early in the month, and then re-taxed in the month, the the Tax has to be paid twice for that month, in the same way that changing keepers mid-month means the tax is doubled.
