Parking fine for eating at a KFC!
Discussion
My lad spent a couple of hours with friends at ur local KFC in Ferndown, Dorset.
Just received a parking penalty notice from a 3rd party for £60. Apparently there is a time limit of 75 minutes.
That makes it an expensive evening out for a 17 year old. Gutted that their staff didn’t even warn them.
He obviously didn’t see a sign, but he is a teenager. Just seems unfair.
We will go and check the car park as it was dark, appreciate any advice.

The signs showing the parking terms are big and clear enough when entering these places so he's only got himself to blame. I fell foul of similar myself at a MSA when I was meeting something coming from the other direction. They'd got held up in a smash and by the time they arrived I'd been there for 2.5 hours which is 30 mins beyond the free period. First I knew about it was when a fine dropped on my doormat some weeks later with a photo of my car arriving and departing along with time stamps. No-one to blame but myself for not bothering to read any of the numerous signs displaying the parking terms.
Tell him to suck it up, pay it and move on.

There is plenty of information on here and elsewhere as to whether it could be fought at court. Does it amount to a penalty, old contract law etc etc.
I think a lot of the firms have tightened up and are pretty legally solid these days so that’s probably not a viable route. Or at least morel one without a decent risk of increased £££.
Are KFC directly contracting the parking firm? If so it may be worth considering directly appealing to them as to whether they’d consider a reduction / discretion (if possible) given you son is a customer and explaining the rest of the situation etc.

Local Asda and McDonald’s near ours have similar in place to stop people parking there all day for work etc...
On the odd occasion anyone I’ve known has had a ticket for overstaying they’ve taken it to the store and it’s been cancelled.
I’m assuming the 75 minute limit is to stop people taking the piss and not to do anyone for staying in kfc for too long, I’d go in and explain that I was there and ask if they’ll can fix it up. Nothing to lose.

Send your lad in and ask to speak to the manager.
Useful life skill, a bit of grovelling and an apology, he might find it goes a long way. Nothing ventured...
This is the best idea. Most of these are franchises and they have up to 10 appeals / cancellations that they can put forward each month, often staff using other non logged cars, or people who have been taken ill etc!! But go in with the receipt if you can find it, tell him to speak to the manager and just say that he likes the place, he eats there a lot, but this has left a bit of a sour taste in his mouth, (more than the gravy!) mouth and he hopes they could help out so he can happily keep using the place to eat...Useful life skill, a bit of grovelling and an apology, he might find it goes a long way. Nothing ventured...
If he is nice and polite about it, it is likely they will have it quashed for him. If they say they will quash it, (the KFC I mean) , make sure he keeps the penalty notice thing and double check in a week that it is gone, by logging into the parking cos website and try to "pay the penalty", if it doesn't recognise your PCN you know it is gone. If it does, go back to KFC and ask again! Or it will £120!

They can cancel it if they want to. If not don't go there againUseful life skill, a bit of grovelling and an apology, he might find it goes a long way. Nothing ventured...

To be fair 75 minutes in a KFC is plenty of time! Must have been sat there not eating for over an hour!
If it's anything like the KFC near me, 75 minutes is about the average amount of time it takes to be served when you're first in the queue.
I've not eaten KFC for 40 years since I got some that still had a pulse in it, but you can usually scoff a take-away in a cardboard container in 10-15 mins. max. RichB said:

A couple of the local Drive-Thru's near me have a similar restriction in place. Most of them were introduced a couple of years back to prevent the Friday / Saturday night car cruisers / wannabe drifters from taking up the car park all evening / night. On the odd occasion anyone I’ve known has had a ticket for overstaying they’ve taken it to the store and it’s been cancelled.

Edit - one of the local McD's also had an issue, as referenced by an earlier poster, with certain people parking up to "eat" when in reality they were smoking a few joints instead.

I counted 5 parking signs at Ferndown
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.801604,-1.889726...
And at least 10 at Christchurch.
Do a full 180 and nearly all of them are there to see.

You can't say he wasn't warned.

Agree but when you’ve only been driving for a few months, it’s dark and you’re a teenager, it’s not obvious that there’s even a chance of getting a fine in a restaurants own car park that you are frequenting. This is about fairness.https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.801604,-1.889726...

Life isn't fair. Never has been and never will be. Tell him to dry his eyes, pay up and move on. Hard lesson learned and he'll know to check the signs before he parks in future.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
