Obviously not wanting to put too much detail, but can anyone here advise if there is such a thing? I'm aware you can take out After-The-Event insurance (or Conditional Fee Arrangements - I'm a bit fuzzy on the difference) if you are the claimant.

But not sure what you can do if you're possibly going to be the defendant, when you are in the gap between something having happened and not knowing if it's going to go to court. I have a nasty feeling there's nothing available other than sucking it up and paying the fees from savings or loans.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Some people I know were on the end of a defamation claim. It turned out that it was covered by their existing insurance so might be worth checking any insurance policies you have. Legal cover on house, business or whatever

Contact Ian Coleman at AmTrust. But NB - ATE insurance is super expensive.

ATE is not at all the same as a conditional fee. ATE insures a litigant against the costs risk of litigation. It covers the liability to pay the opposing party's costs.
