My mum's car has sat on her driveway uninsured and untaxed, but with an MOT. Not a problem as it has not been needed since her eyesight failed.

Being a nice lad and knowing that she can't get in my car, I thought that I would take her out for the day in her car.

I thought a quick call to the insurance to get the car insured for a couple of days and then get it taxed and off we could go.

Me to Insurance - "How much to insure for three days?"
Insurance - "£30"
Me - "Happy with that. How long before it's on MID so that I can tax it?"
Insurance - "You won't be able to tax it because it is not permanently insured."
banghead

Luckily, it was only £80 to insure for the rest of year on my joint policy, but I think that it's a bit of a daft scenario.

By the time I've insured it and taxed it, it would have been cheaper to hire a car. Does anybody hire out Suzuki Wagon R's eek ?

That sounds like tosh to me, they just can't be bothered to put it on the MIB database for 3 days, so it won't show up when you try to tax it

Ask them to email you a certificate/cover note and then you can still tax it at the post office

Don't forget you will have to re sorn it when the insurance runs out

It is utter tosh - they did away with the insurance check when buying VED a while ago.

And as above, don't forget to SORN if the insurance expires and you don't plan on renewing

Good point. But I also believe they also have a duty to put it on the data base within a matter of hours. I'm sure someone will know the timescale.

Not a good scenario to get your car seized in the middle of the night because you have nothing to show it's insured.

5 working days.

Hence I think this case wouldn't be require to be put on, as it would have expired by the time they had to do it

It was all ready to rock 'n' roll within an hour, but it cost a full year's insurance (£80).

Not really that serious on a cheap to insure motor. Would have been a lot worse if it had been the Veyron wink.
