I’m doing a lot of motorway driving lately due to changes in job and ferrying daughter to uni and back every other weekend. It’s mainly M3 from J3 right down to M27.

I tend to sit at 83mph reading on the car speedo, GPS reads 80mph, apart from the section with the speed cameras.

My question, has anyone actually been done by plod for doing 80mph or less on a motorway where the limit is 70mph?

None of this “a mate of a mate” etc. Just really interested if any PH’rs out there have actually been prosecuted at this speed.

Well, you (apparently) shouldn't have done. Most of the pages explaining this say you need to be doing between 79 and 86.

Automated cameras will not prosecute under 79 but I wouldn't trust a human operated camera van with the same number.

Why on earth are you ferrying your daughter back and forth to uni....the general idea is you go to uni and then go home three years later

The entire round trip takes you 10 minutes less at 80mph than it does at 70mph. Is it worth the extra fuel and risk of points? Fuel consumption increases exponentially with speed

Why does she keep coming back.

Part of the point of going to university is to enable the child to be independent.

Not quite. My, and many others', cars are more fuel efficient at 70 than 55 due to gearing factors - 6th rather than 5th. In a perfect world you're right of course. Something I observed was that heavy rain causes a notable deterioration in economy at motorway speeds caused, I assume, by shifting surface water.

Only if you have a 70mph tail wind. Increased drag will outweigh any small gearing advantage

According to my on-board computer it is better in sixth by a reasonable margin. Okay, they're notoriously off-beam but not too far surely?

Redundant in 80 vs 70 as you'll be in 6th surely.

My car will happily do 55 in 6th and it's a high revving NA motor so other than a clunky auto I can't see why it'd be in 5th.

Computer is likely to do some sort of arbitrary reduction in MPG for being in a lower gear. As said, not to be relied upon for accuracy at all.
