In cambridge yesterday, go for dinner and park in a loading bay. Loading bay sign says Loading only 7am-7pm. I turn up at 7.30 thinking ok fair enough I can park here.

Come out at 8pm there's a damn parking ticket. Chase after the kn@bends (nothing personal, but around here they really are!) to ask why I got the ticket - they smugly point out the next sign along the road that says "Taxi rank 7pm-7am."

Now imho that's pretty damn cheeky by the council! No one's going to notice both signs, they'll just look at the one. And so this way 24/7 people are parking there and getting fines.

Either way - I was stupid - I got fined fair enough.

However the fine specifically says **5 I*** whereas my numberplate is a legal 51 plate.

The ticket definitely has a capital I in the place of the 1.

So my question is? Are they likely to realise that the letter I is not allowed in the UK and that it's a 51 plate? Or is there a computer that automatically does this?

Basically (I don't mind paying btw, its a matter of principal and testing the system) do you reckon in 28 days time they'll check for the address of 5I and find it doesn't exist and forget about it.

Or will some guy in an office realise that the rookie warden made a mistake, correct it, and post me a fine twice as big?

With a speeding ticket I think you'd be found 2nd time around.

Not so sure about parking tickets... check www.parkingticket.co.uk for a bit more info.

Do the traffic wardens in Cambridge have cameras? This could have a big bearing on the issue...

For something so glaringly obvious as transposition of I and 1 I would pay it.

Its going to be easier in the long run.

If it was a case of them putting a completly wrong character on (i.e. a V instead of a F), then you could ignore it as there would be no way that any follow-up would be traced back to you - just some other poor sod with the corresponding reg!

My wife got a parking ticket last year with the wrong number - ignored it, and never heard any more.

Not sure about a '1' and an 'I', they might be bothered to do a bit more checking.

Maybe see if they send a postal demand, instead of just the ticket?

If they do then pay it, if they don't then don't...

If they got me on a technicality I would be inclined to try to get off on one

Well, since you've never owned the vehicle that the ticket details, you cannot be held liable.

Do not tell them about their mistake.

I personally do not think that you have a chance BUT,
nothing ventured nothing gained.

Write back and tell that you do not own a motor vehicle .......... and see if it works. Question will be is how come you have the ticket??????.

Ignore the ticket and the fine goes up after non payment 14 days (IIRC) followed by the issue of a Charge Certificate and action at County Court to recover as a debt. By writing back within the 14 days the increased charge is put on hold. From their reply which will be pay, lodge an appeal with the Adjudicator and again keep the charge on hold.

You never know it may succeed.

I wouldn't, you don't a vehicle with the registration that they allege was parked illegally. If they've got it wrong, that's just tough - if they have no other evidence then how can they do anything?

Sod em, if you can get off on a technicality then do so. Once it comes to court ask to see the original ticket and point out the error. No way will they convict, it would change the law.

Exactly why I don't want to pay it!

Thanks for the replies guys, turns out the ticket fell out the window on the way back home so looks like I'll be waiting for the one in the post

It was years ago now but I got a speeding fine (before scamaras) and the paper work came through with a digit wrong on the number plate, but the court still upheld my fine.

As usual as a car driver GUILTY untill proved INESENT.

Whatever, photograph (preferable with a 'wet-development' film) the signs on both posts and if there are any posts with multiple signs on them in the same authority area, photograph them too to show that there is no reason why both signs could not have been displayed on each post. Measure the distance between both posted signs. It might help (you never know) - Streaky

Reawakening this ancient thread - it has now been over a month and I have not received anything in the post.

This is confirmation, afaik, that if your parking ticket has a wrong letter or digit you don't have to pay it!

Hope this helps someone

I'm sure that one of the undercover programs the other week showed exactly this point. The guy came in with a parking fine to be paid but it had the wrong van reg on it. He was told to go away and forget about it. When the reporter turned to her parking boss, he said there wasn't anything they could do as the warden had screwed it up. Happens more than you'd imagine according to him.
