Well, maybe not, but would there be any gain from enforcing the lower speed limit during the motorway's busiest times - around the entire motorway, regardless of whether or not it's clear - in an attempt to keep traffic flowing more-freely?

slower speeds enable greater flow.
'assertive' lane changing restricts flow.
a lot of lane captains on here know better though.

60mph minimum and maximum and fill all lanes.

Ps as long as the limit outside those hours is also raised to 140mph smile

I can't see the point in such widespread limits. Despite what some might think the road really isn't wedged nose to tail during every hour of every weekday.

Variable speed limits already achieve the same benefit and others besides.

If that were true 0 mph limit would be optimum.

I'd rather undertaking be made legal, rather than the "blind eye" it's sometimes given now. Everybody seems to drive in L3 or L4, and it's got to a point where theoretically I could sail past a load of cars all nose-to-tail in L4, whilst I'm in an empty L1 or L2. If this was to happen, it'd be every single day I drive the M25.

Rather than slowing people down, I think a little bit of lane discipline goes a long way.

No !

Next thing you'll find 60 mph 24\7 permanently.

60mph at rush hour? Chance would be a fine thing.

I am fairly sure that what you are describing is not classed as undertaking and is perfectly legal.

For the most part, IME, The M25 flows quite adequately between junctions - However, Junctions and (Dun dun dun) The A282 Are the real chokepoints. It'd be nice to get a proper river crossing and reduced limits or improved junction design (Though to be fair, I don't think it'd be possible without the extensive addition of frontage roads etc.)

Please tell whatever numpties are setting the speed limit from J12 to J11 (and sometimes J10).

In over 5 years I've only seen it set above 50 mph once at any time of day (I think that was when the gantries weren't working)!

It's so f*cked-up I just don't bother trying to use it these days - A331, A31 and A3 is much quicker.

Limiting the speed on the M25 just makes it pointless! banghead

Scrap the speed limit, bin the cameras, impose some lane discipline and the M25 may actually work!

NO.

The M25 has bottlenecks and when you get past these you can make progress.

Setting a limit to 60mph would just let the Middle Lane Morons and Fast Lane Captains slow us all done that bit more.

We have variable for a reason......and it's usually slower just due to the volume of traffic.

Lower speed means more traffic so more congestion.

If you have a journey that takes an hour then at a lower speed it will take longer.
Everyone spending more time on a particular road results in more cars on that road, therefore more congestion.

M1 Around J10-J12 and J28 to 30 something seems to be permanently 60mph since introducing smart motorways.

I noticed the area around J28 now says it’s to reduce pollution.

I use the the M25 regularly. All the variable speed limit does is make cars concertina as idiots start to panic something is actualy wrong and you end up with stop start traffic. Once you get past the "Smart" spread limits you normally find the is no reason for this issue.

During congestion it would be better to just set a section at a constant speed and stop messing about increasing or decreasing it.

However nothing is worse than when they put it on for zero reason whatsoever, I always presume that someone has gone for a st and forgot to turn it off.

It makes no sense to make the whole road 60. It is only generally certain sections that are bad and we are meant to be making progress with engineering. Before we know it there will be a man in front of us with a flag...
