Just out of curiosity, does anyone have any idea why the following happened, or could have happened?

I was driving home the other night around 7.30pm. Just been to work and the shops - left Tesco to drive home (only a five minute journey). I pulled out of a junction and the police (who were sat opposite) followed me to my door.

I pulled up, parked and went inside a couple of times (bringing shopping etc in) and they sat behind where I’d parked, but blocking the road - they made no move to get out, stop me or talk to me.

The third time I came out of the house they’d driven off. For full disclosure I have one broken wing mirror after someone did a hit and run on my car a few weeks ago. Never been pulled over before or had any driving offences of any kind.

Anyone have any idea why they followed me to my door and stopped, but made no attempt to talk to me or book me for anything?

How are you sure it was the police?

Part of the new Tesco initiative making sure their customers arrive home safely. Surprised you haven't heard about it.

Could be they were waiting for a PNC check to come back.

But could be a number of things.

Doing checks on your car, waiting for the radio to be clear. Comes back all in order - resumes patrol?

OP I had this once, had been to Brands for the day, on the way home dropped a mate at Sidcup station and then went to a mates house, from the station to the house they followed me and then parked up outside his, so i went and asked what was up

It turns out I was the absolute spit of someone well known to them who had not 2 days before been disqualified from driving, they were doing checks on the vehicle, they knew as soon as I spoke to them I wasn't the same guy, they thanked me apologised if they had worried me and went on their way

You should have asked them, they don't bite

Having watched "The Big Lebowski" the other day, is it possible you have a local namesake who has been up to no good? biglaugh

Is it possible the OP has unwittingly found himself the subject of surveillance practice? If he's spotted them three times they obviously need it...

Serious question though, as the one and only time I have been stopped in the UK was after a short chase I wasn't aware I was partaking in... Young policeman, I got the impression he was just getting in some practice before having to deal with actual naughty people. I didn't mind but we had to go through the whole process before I was allowed to continue the 50ft to my driveway.
