What Did I See??

Driving to work yesterday morning at 7:30, on my usual route which I've done umpteen times before and hardly ever see a soul for the first 5 miles or so as it's twisty back roads in fairly rural villages. I was coming through one of the villages, through a 30 bit for 200 yards or so then it goes to NSL.

About 100 yards or so ahead of the NSL sign there's a farm gate opening; I could see a small white LED light coming from the silhouette of a van. Immediately I'm thinking "camera van" and eased off the throttle. Once I was up close - parked up was an air force blue or navy Berlingo van with no markings, no windows cut out or anything - just your bog standard tradesmans Berlingo van. There was nobody sat in the front that I could see and it was all in darkness.

Behind it though, about 2 feet or so away from the back bumper was a small tripod with what looked like a little camera on pointing along the road; said LED was coming from this little camera. I've never seen anything like this before in over 5 years of driving, I've seen numerous marked and unmarked camera vans but nothing like that. This morning driving the same route the van wasn't there, so it clearly was a one off. It just seemed really weird to me.

I'm really perplexed as to what I saw, speaking to family and colleagues I'm told it could be a survey, or possibly ANPR cameras for tax/insurance etc. More for curiosity more than anything, has anybody got any ideas what it could have been?

Sounds like a surveyor to me, you see loads around.

DVLA Road Tax ANPR camera - used to see them loads of times, but now since the local office closed, no more. They normally have DVLA logo on the side of the van and little pop-up sign to say 'Road Tax Check'
