When I head to school to take/pick up my young daughter, I have to walk down a piece of road that has no pavement. One side is houses with hedges at the front and the other is the bank of a stream of water. Pretty much every day, you will witness at least one idiot driving too fast and too close to you. The road has a 30mph limit.

The other day, a driver got far too close and the vehicle wing mirror touched my back and side as they passed. This happened as they were following a cyclist that has just passed me (and a vehicle was coming the other way), so thankfully it was quite a low speed. However, it really annoyed me so I ended up giving one of the vehicle windows a rather hefty smack. The driver then floored it, dangerously passed the cyclist and disappeared down the road.

I've got the vehicle reg. It's a Vauxhall Mokka thing. 16 plate. Any point in reporting this to the police? Or is it a waste of time? Luckily, they only annoyed me and didn't hurt me. I was walking along the edge of the bank too, so they were pretty much off the side of the road.

They weren't to know you were not hurt and it was more luck than judgement. I am not sure much would come of it, if you did report it. Obviously I don't know what was possible but, in general, it's better to walk on the right side of the road so you can see passing traffic.

There is no get out of the way room on the right hand side of this road when walking a certain way. The house hedges are right up to the road. Hence why we walk on the bank side. We are on the right on the way back home though. smile

Report it. It may be a waste of time but at least you've done what you can.

I'd agree with this, although do so in the full knowledge that nothing will come of it.

The driver may have assumed he's,she's harmed you and so did a runner. That would be pretty serious imo. It may have been a woman who was frightened because you banged on the window.

Report it.
I live on a road with no footpath, a girl walking to school was hit by a vans side mirror. Fortunately not too serious.

I would report it, flooring it away shows pretty poor character on the driver's part.

Report it, if it was a few more centimeters into you then you'd be seriously injured. Who's to say it's the first time the driver has done someone like this?

I'd also ask the police to contact the insurers, perhaps make them pay for dry cleaning the clothing the mirror hit as then the driver will have to pay increased premiums when it comes to renewal time.

Cheers all. I'll report it.

You never know, the driver may have form.

I'd hate for this to happen when I'm actually with my daughter.

Echoing everyone else here. Report it.

Anyone notice that Mokka drivers seem to be some of the worst drivers out there? If they're not doing 20 below the speed limit, they're hogging the middle lane, not noticing green light changes or swaying from side to side in their lane.

I wouldn't report it simply because you're not injured, "what could've happened" didn't happen, and the Police are stretched to breaking point anyway.

That's not to say the driver wasn't unobservant, but that could have been all it was. A mistake, that didn't actually result in injury on this occasion and may never happen again. To suggest that they might "have form" for hitting people with their wing mirrors is a bit ludicrous, really.

If you had actually been injured it would be a different story.

Interesting. I ran 101 and I have to fill in an allegation of bad driving form. You used to report things to the operator. Wonder when that changed?

Probably around about the time when the police ceased to do anything about low-level law and order, blaming 'cuts'.

Perhaps filling out a form weeds out those who can't be bothered to fill it out. Makes sense since if the Police are going to do anything about it they would need the victim to be determined enough to actually cooperate.
