Sister filled up with petrol, £46, paid using a debit card on the pump and was charged £2.

when i passed the petrol station later that day - my tank was full as a filled up earlier - there was a big queue for the pump, can people be charged with some sort of theft?

When I fill up often the charge on my card is £1 for up to 48 hours until the true value comes through.

This could be the case here

Every time I've used pay at pump the take off a small amount and it is corrected a few days later when the payment is cleared.

I have found the opposite.

Nothing is taken but £99 appears as a 'pending' transaction, which is then replaced by the actual amount in a few days.

Asda by any chance? There was some media backlash on their method and they intended to change it

It's pre-authorisation. The pumps will charge £1 to the card as a pre-authorisation, Depending on the type of account, some will record the sale virtually immediately or some will reduce the available balance on your account. Asda did go the route of doing full £99 pre-auths but there was uproar with people getting charged £99 for £20 worth of fuel and not being able to buy food until the pre-auth disappeared/corrected itself. They have now gone back to £1 pre-auths.

Just wow. Who says people aren't living hand-to-mouth?

Apart from having transactions declined, do these holds show on the card statement - how do people know about them? I've never heard of them before.

Depends on your card company.

Amex list pending transactions on a separate page on the account on the website, others just list £x of pending/authorizations, others you can just work it out from the difference between the balance and the credit limit.

You can see them in online banking almost immediately. Normally a purchase sees all the money go out instantly with no actual value or purpose stated. So your account would be down £20 then in a few days when cleared you'd look again and it would state the £20 and where it was.

In this sense pre fuel they take a pre £1 essentially checking you have the correct details in. Asda did £99 knowing they would always have that money. Others then charge you upon completion the correct amount but this may not be processed for 48 hours.

I'm not sure. I've seen some pre-auths on my account as £1 from some petrol retailers on my mobile banking app. Others don't show a pre-auth and just take the amount from the available balance - I generally only ever use pay at pump as I find it quicker and I don't want to interact with a human. biggrin

I guess that if you aren't living hand to mouth you'd never notice. It was only that I was checking my bank account to see if a holiday booking had cleared.

Yes, but the BP 'pay at pump through your phone' app does similar taking £150 (if I recall correctly - the app is st so got deleted as soon as I got my free £10 from Amex for using it).

They won't appear on your statements. If you check your online banking they may immediately appear in the first 24-48 hours. But following authorisation of the complete transaction you never see the pre auth

They must be wetting themselves behind the garage counter laughing at the queue of people with their coat collars turned up taking advantage of the latest scam they read about on Facebook.

They don't show on a statement as no money leaves or goes into the account. From personal experience, I bank with HSBC and if I view my online account after using the pay at pump thing it might say (for example): Account: £1,000.00 Available funds: £999.00.

The missing £1 is the authorisation thing as other have said above.Sadly that disappears and is replaced by a -£75 when the actual transaction goes through.

Because the financial services industry is propped up by millions of batch processes.

They want to make sure you are authorised to use the card before you start filling up.

Always shows as £1 for about 3 days, £99 if it's Asda or Sainsburys
