Hi all,

In extraordinary bad luck I am faced with my third non fault insurance claim in a year.
On saturday my parked car was clipped by a car evading the police by driving along a pedestrian alley way that my car was parked near. The driver was caught by police on the other side.
Minor wing and bumper damage to my car but I want it sorted.
The police officer who notified me of the damage said they could not give me the arrested drivers details but I got the incident reference. He said traffic would contact me but they haven't yet. I got the offender's car reg and pics of the damage. The people had been taken away by the time I was alerted to the damage.
My insurers are saying unless I get the drivers details they will be asking for me to pay my excess on the repair albeit logged as non fault.
It seems to cost at least £30 for an individual to put in an information request to MET police.

Am I right in thinking this is all for my insurers to now sort out not me?? Shouldn't they get the drivers details from the Met on my behalf? Or is this because I did not take legal cover on my policy as I have a free motoreasy legal service.

Can someone knowledgeable advise?

If you've got the reg of the third party vehicle, go to onto the AskMid website and type the reg in. You will get details of the third party insurer. Contact them and advise them of the accident.

If the vehicle is insured, they will cover the damage to your vehicle regardless as to whether the vehicle was driven by their policyholder or a thief.

It’s a PIA ( Police involved Accident )

It will therefore have been reported .. speak to Comms and ask for the CAD number of the pursuit and the details of the OIC

Tell comms that your vehicle was hit by the target vehicle whilst it was being pursued and ask for it’s details to be added to the CAD ( Incident log ) if not already on it

Then ask for the OIC to contact you

Once you have the CAD number and OIC details you can then give these details to your insurance company who will follow it up with the Met for you

You don’t need the drivers details .. just the insurance company details of the offending vehicle if it’s stolen

If it’s a non insured vehicle it’s a bit more problematic but should be referred to the MIB

Is there somewhere that you can get that translated into English?

It's an uninsured vehicle predictably!

Spoke again to insurers and they confirmed they are getting the police report and I don't need to chase.

However I may only get my excess back if the driver turns out to have insurance and they pay up or my insurers uninsured driver team are successful. All will take months though...

Comms = Call takers, phone 101
CAD = Reference number
OIC = Officer in charge of the investigation

Waiting since Saturday isn't a huge delay. Contact them via 101, give them the details and ask to be contacted by the officer dealing (OIC). The officer may be on rest days however.

Give the reference number to your insurance company.

MIB only get involved if you can't reclaim your losses. If you are fully comp then they can't help.

Nope it does not show the insurer name only says the vehicle is on the national insurance database

Is this because the driver is a criminal and therefore gains the right to privacy or something?

Just seems odd because I thought there was a requirement to share your details with the other party if you have an accident?

You would think so but no , data protection comes into play ,the insurance co will chase the details from the police nce they have the incident number . We had an accident last year and despite us giving the 3rd party all our details (he was taken off in an ambulance ) he has never contacted us and the police would only divulge the incident number , our insurance were fine with this and handled everthing .

Yes it does. It gives the name and the contact number for the insurer. You don’t even pay for it. Go to the AskMid mobile site and there’s a page you complete if you’ve been involved in an accident. It’ll show the third Larry insurance details.
