Hello,

I've just had a speeding fine through the post, relating to August 2018. From speaking to the hire car company it looks like we have picked up 1 x speeding fine and 1 x parking fine.
The parking fine has not come in the post (yet)

Just to be clear I have no issue with paying the fines as we must have been speeding.
We genuinely do not know who was driving at the time as we shared the driving, its fairly safe to assume it was me rather than my wife 😁

However, the timescale seems a bit long. Can they really send it 6 months later and then enforce payment? And is it just the speeding fines they can send or will the parking come separately?

Thanks for any advice / thoughts

The french system doesn’t care who was driving, as there’s no points it doesn’t matter. I just got done for 90 in a 70 and it cost me €45

There is a mechanism for the countries to share keeper/owner details around Europe, but there is not an easy mechanism for them to enforce it.

We receive around 10-15 a week for our fleet, and although we reply to each one with the operator details, to date none of those operators have been contacted by the issuing authority in Europe. Likewise we have not yet been approached by any agency or enforcement body to pay any of the fines.

As above though, pay the fine, and any risk or threat goes away - it's not endorsable on your UK licence so as long as the fine is paid, there is no chance of any comeback.

Will the hire company just take the money from the card you used to hire the car? I also thought most hire company's in France charge an admin charge on top.

Annoyingly they dont pay the fine automatically, just passed on my details and charged the admin fee for that! Easy €45 for them...
