I’ll try to keep this brief.

Son in Army resides in Salisbury, me North East. VW van for sale up here so agree to buy it for him and I buy his car when he gets up here. My PCP on leaf comes to an end so arranged collection today, all good, car now gone. Unfortunately my Son put on a course last minute so can’t come home till a week on Wed. This now leaves me without a vehicle for a week.

Spoke to my insurance as I thought I’ll transfer my insurance on Leaf to his van (sat outside) then switch to his car in a weeks time, to be told no can dofrown as it’s registered in sons name, even though it’s this address (uses this address due to moving around with Army). They said to get Son to put van on his insurance temporarily and have me as a named driver until the 6th March.

Down side is he is extremely busy with the course and I need a car for tomorrow. So not too sure he will get the time to contact them as I’ve just spent the last 30mins on hold while they faff and check on things. Also, he’s 27 with six points on his licence and sounds expensive for him to insure two vehicles even if it is on a temporary basis.

Any ideas how to sort this out? Also my insurance covers me to drive other cars, but I assume they have to be already insured?

Can you not do a temporary insurance work a week? A lot of companies do it.

How far do you need to go?

Long way - Train or Hire a car.
Not quite as far - Public transport or Taxi.
Short distance - Public transport or Cycle
Even shorter - Walk!
Get a friend to give you a lift.

I appreciate none of these are ideal, especially with another vehicle sat on your drive, however it is only a week and they are all probably cheaper and easier than trying to fight the insurance industry.

Good luck.

A few have this restriction, but I’ve only ever seen it on one policy (that of my 17 year old daughter, who is excluded from using it anyway). I’ve never seen the restriction on any of my policies, nor those of my wife.

Probably need to dig out my policy and check, although it still may be a gamble as it will be third party only and vans worth15k.

Just tried a temp insurance and £80 for a week so not too badsmile

Thanks for suggestions.

Just checked the cost for a day and it’s actually with my present insurance, not sure why they didn’t cover this this morning as an option. Bit expensive as it’s £24.75 a day, a fortnight of this would cost more than my annual insurance on two cars, now I know why it’s only for emergencies biggrin
