HGV speed limits
Discussion
I followed a 'fast' lorry last year.
I'd say it was capable of cruising at mid-60s mph.
They're mostly on the M11 and A11 in my area; I haven't seen one on the A14.

(yes, I know his reg number, no I didn't grass him up as he wasn't driving dangerously)

Put in neutral, easy to hit over 60 on a downhill with weight pushing you.
The UK speed limit for HGV's is 60 BTW, it's an EU law governing the 56 mph limiter, hopefully be removed soon.
Wrong. You dont need to put it in neutral at all, it still crosses over the limiter on a down hill when in gear. The UK speed limit for HGV's is 60 BTW, it's an EU law governing the 56 mph limiter, hopefully be removed soon.
Not long after the tachograph goes mad with beeping and its recorded as an overspeed if you dont brake. The boss will see this when you put your card into their machine at end of day or week or vosa if pulled over.

They all must be different as mine wont go over in gear, it in neutral easy to do so. Not long after the tachograph goes mad with beeping and its recorded as an overspeed if you dont brake. Old style tacho too so no beeping.
I was passed by an Irish registered artic late one night on the M5, i was doing 70-75 mph, he went past in the outside lane and i was on the inside, middle lane clear, I phoned the police who asked details of lorry, where we were and was i prepared to give evidence, I never did hear anything further.
On a similar vain there are some exceptions one that I was involved with in a previous job was unrestricted tractor units, we had one that went from Berkshire to just north of Carlisle at an average speed of 93 mph (with a police escort).

It's usually Irish or Spanish HGVS that are flying past at speeds way over the limits .
When the speed limiters were first introduced a couple of nationalities often retained and refurbished the unrestricted trucks . As is the way of things ,ways to defeat the limiters soon emerged .
If you want to see the full speeding madness try the A75 at night . It's full wacky racers on the charge to and from the ferries.
I used to drive a recovery truck that wasn't restricted and frequently had it off the clock at 80mph plus .
One place that I worked had a Scanìa 143 that frequently topped 100mph . It did regular trips from the toe of Italy to Calais non stop with the speedo and tacho off the dial
, all totally illegal but not as easy to prove as on modern trucks .

Yeah righto.

Certain Irish ( and other ) hauliers have become quite adept at getting around speed limiters and drivers hours regs
The usual one is a hidden switch that each time it’s pressed gives and extra 10% speed .. yet still shows the correct speed on the tacho
Sometimes the only way to prove the offence is using time/distance calculations
Ghost drivers and all sorts of stunts are pulled on transnational journeys

We had numerous vehicles that if civilian would have required tacho’s and limiters but didn’t

Worst thing you could do is put it in neutral to freewheel down a hill, would literally have no control over the engine speed. The UK speed limit for HGV's is 60 BTW, it's an EU law governing the 56 mph limiter, hopefully be removed soon.
