RTA 1980 Section 144
Discussion
Section 144 of the RTA states:
Section 143 of this Act does not apply to a vehicle owned by a person who has deposited and keeps deposited with the Accountant General of the [F1Senior Courts] the sum of [F2£500,000], at a time when the vehicle is being driven under the owner’s control.
Which means if you've lodged £500k with the Courts, you don't have to have car insurance.
Does anyone know of any individual that has done this?

According to this FOI request there only seem to be four entities that currently do it.

How many of those are companies and how many are individuals is not clear, despite the requester's rather silly demands for names and addresses. But obviously if any individuals have done it they are few and far between.
