Now I understand that rice machines and loud boy racer cars can be a nuisance but with all the stabbings surely this is just petty from the forces. I bet these boys never disclosed everything in their lives.

Seems a tad harsh to me.

"This little fiesta, with a big noise has just been seized as it passed through Canklow. The driver had failed to disclose all of the modifications (including his 'straight through' exhaust) to his insurers. The insurers confirmed that as the modifications were never declared, it isnt insured.

Another one for us to look after.

Moral of the story...declare your vehicle mods or it you may end up struggling to get insurance in the future."

I just added another bike to my policy. No word of a lie, the bloke on the end of the phone said "Don't bother telling me it's not standard. It's 40 years old. Of course it's not standard.".

He didnt even want to know what might not be stock.

The advantage of a specialist classic insurer that understands these things!

Insurance fraud meaning the driver is uninsured, I don't think that's petty?

All well and good, but.. On another recent PH thread, posters were pointing out that they had made full declaration of mods to insurers who had then failed to keep a full record, so how can the Police rely on phone calls to check this sort of thing?

Seems a bit worrying for anyone with mods.

Of course, in this case, the driver may have just admitted nothing was declared...And/or badly failed the attitude test.

Don’t know why people are upset over this. It’s not like it’s 1 little thing not declared, it’s clearly been extensively modified. The driver has deliberately lied to his insurance company rather than forgotten to mention something.

I guess if you are going to drive around in a "please pull me advert" you better make sure you are 100% legal.

I think something else must have triggered off the fact that the police wanted to seize the car through a technicality (assuming all of the reported facts are true). They wouldn't go to those lengths normally just to take a car off someone. There will be more to it all.

exactly. what kind of police force would pull over someone and ask them if they've declarated all their mods. i can imagine it now.

OFFICER: 'oi sir, you are driving around in a bog standard fiesta zetec. did you declare those zetec S alloys? they aren't factory items and they aren't an optional extra when you configure it on the ford website. i don't think you did. you're nicked'

Police love to make out they are doing everyone a service taking these 'uninsured' drivers off the road, but really all they are doing is for the benefit of the insurance companies, who in all likelihood are not passing that benefit on to consumers.

There is a MIB uninsured drivers agreement that means if you are hit by an uninsured driver, you still get paid out, so at absolute worst these people are responsible for a bit more hassle for a few people.

There is the claim that these drivers are pushing up everyone else premiums, but the reality is you pay more for insurance with modifications, primarily because you fall into a demographic with more higher risk takers not because the modification represents a real direct increase in risk.

If the day someone was going to go and get a noisy exhaust fitted, they decided instead to spend the money on something else, they'd still be the same person. There is absolutely no way that the one decision in their life is going to make them measurably more or less likely to be involved in an accident. So if they were a risk taker, they are just as likely to put people's premiums up by having an accident. It makes no difference to the motor insurance buying public if the claim is settled by thier insurer or the policy is voided and the claims are settled by the MIB uninsured drivers fund because they are collectively funding both types of claims.

They wouldn't be the same person, they would be a different person who makes different decisions. In this case they would also be more honest than the ST driver. It's not just about accidents it's the overall risk. People who make the former decision are a measurably higher insurance risk, that's why they pay more. If they don't pay more then everyone else has to pay more.

Not if you are fully comp.
Your insurance will have to pay it.

The MIB step in to cover the damage to your vehicle where you're 3rd party & hit by an uninsured driver.

If we're going to use that logic, why be truthful about anything you tell your insurers? Tell them you're a retired vicar whose been driving 50 years without an accident and does 2000 miles a year. They would still cover the third party f you crash.

It is a legal requirement to have insurance so why does that help insurance companies?
