Young daughter is off in the Far East for a few months as pat of her Uni. course.
Her car renewal is due next month. She plans to do a bit of travelling after her time at Uni in Hong Kong so wont be back til late July/ early August.
Her car sits on the driveway all day and only moves when I take it out to warm the fluids and charge the battery (usually once a week if i get the time).
Fairly obviously she cant be the main driver as shes not even in the country. Obviously having me as main driver will drastically reduce the premium while she is abroad and then when she returns we'll change the details and pay the extra but save on 4 months premium ( a sort of reverse fronting if you will) NOT A CHANCE.
Main driver as 20 year old student or 50 something consultant makes NO DIFFERENCE. Strange, if it was the other way round it would make a massive difference.
Car insurance.....govt. approved robbery

It's because it looks a lot like fronting to an insurance company.
It would probably make more sense to opt for a temporary policy for yourself, probably only a few £100 without her as a named driver - Alternatively, stump up for her as the main driver so she can gain an extra year of NCB and hopefully shave a bit off of next year.

Your penultimate sentence doesn’t really make sense. It makes no difference who the main driver is as your young daughter is the highest risk on the policy so whether she’s the main driver or named driver, the premium is going to be very similar.

I would cancel the policy and SORN it? (Or even set up a new policy with you/ attach to your current)

If they tried to charge for the cancellation, refuse and say you will complain - they always fold IME

^^^THIS. Loads of people say "my young daughter is on the pol but I'm the main user". Most are lying. They haven't got time to come round and check your story. One of the reasons car insurance is cheap in the UK is that it's a sausage machine, info in, quote out.

As said, cancel the policy and take out a new one for you only driving.

Or if you can afford it keep it going so she gets NCB, always helpful at that age.

To get the premium down to what it should be for you, you need to not insure her. You may have a view that she won't drive it, but how does the ins co know that? The only way is for her not to be insured. Insuring young people is expensive and rightly so - they always crash.

Don't bother renewing the insurance.
Take out day insurance for the odd time you want to move it

Hey, I'm doing alright so far; But then, I'm a driving god with abilities far in excess of 99.9% of the driving public, and I would never ever make a mistake and learn from it. tongue out

When I hear others of my age group, discussing their escapades, and think of some of the mistakes I've made in the past, I can absolutely see why insurance premiums are as they are.
