So on the commute back home today there was a speed van on the side of the dual carriageway. I was probably doing about 80-84 before I saw it (76-80). Few questions:

1. How do these cameras work? I think I was close enough to the car in front to hide my license plate, but maybe we both got pinged for speeding but by the time we had slowed down and gotten closer it was able to register my plate??

2. Am I safe if I was doing 76 or 77? I’m in NE Scotland btw, I’ve heard it can vary depending on the force.

Chances are if you were above their limit they would have pinged you before you even saw the van

Appears Scottish law is the same as regards NIP requirement so assuming you are the registered keeper and the address is correct you'll have to wait 14 days & see if one drops through your letterbox.

They were over the crest of a hill - a hill which the car in front took it’s time getting up hence why I was so close to it

With a bit of luck, if you were close enough to the car in front for it to cover your numberplate then they'll have taken the picture from the rear and will do you for tailgating.
