Flashed after variable limit returned to NSL

This morning I was flashed by the variable speed cameras on the M1 southbound at Junction 33.

I was joining the motorway from the slip road and following other traffic I accelerated up to around 50 mph. I noticed the variable speed limit signs ahead on the motorway were showing a 40 limit and the very left lane had an arrow indicating traffic to move over to the right.

As I began to decelerate and allow traffic to my left to move over the signs changed to show NSL and the traffic around me began to accelerate up to 70mph. I moved across to the left and accelerated along with the surrounding traffic.

As we passed under the variable speed limit signs overhead there was a double flash as the speed cameras were triggered. At this point I estimate I was travelling at around 60 mph so not over the NSL.

Hopefully there are systems in place to detect the camera was triggered in error. I just wondered if any fellow members had experienced similar incidents?

If you read around similar threads, The flash can be triggered when the displayed speed on the gantry changes; You should be safe.

According to other threads on here all the Gantry mounted cameras/gantries ara also monitered by CCTV which records time, date atc to verify what was being shown at any particular time.

Obviously should be calibrated with the gantry Cams but how precise I don't know

ughh, I really need to get a gash cam. I spend a lot of time on the M1 and these variable limits, lane closures etc.... are all a joke. midnight, funnelling everything down to 1 lane, at 40mph for miles. for absolutely nothing. Its just nuts. The anti-car Nazi's have won.

Same thing happened to me yesterday on the M25. Over the Dartford bridge,50 showing on the variable signs up to the A2 junction.
Next gantry showed NSL,so got up to 70 and was flashed by the following gantry which was blank!

Well it’s been a couple of weeks and I’ve not had any nasty letters in the post so fingers crossed the system works!

My thinking is, a lot of drivers see the NSL sign and start to speed up to 80~90mph, so the authorities set the camera to flash at 70mph, to act as a reminder that, although you're no longer in a reduced speed zone, your speed is still being monitored - That way, drivers are kept on their toes as to whether there are cameras waiting to catch them speeding or not.
